5.0 out of 5 stars Really good., August 2, 2006

Really interesting funky record. Every track is different. I really like the guitarist's sound, great riffs. It's rocknroll.

5.0 out of 5 stars When the opening band is better, buy THEIR album., June 16, 2006
This review is from: Hello Graphic Missile (Audio CD)
I saw these guys when they were touring with the Killers last summer and they were rockin! They had already sold out of CDs by the time I saw them, so I was really amped when they finally came out with this release. "Floating on Error" is definately a great track, but I reccommend giving the whole album a listen. It's cohesive, but not repetitive, and it's definately more interesting than the Killers & their pop-rock peers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Record from this Lawrence, KS band, June 7, 2006
This review is from: Hello Graphic Missile (Audio CD)
Conner plays music that is familiar and yet all their own. Think Gang of Four meets late 70's Rolling Stones with the Killers and Spoon thrown in for good measure. Songs like "Cold Feelings" and "Floating on Error" combine off kilter disco beats with great melodies and more edgy guitar/bass lines. Then there are the rockers like "Up to You" and "Eyed, Eyes, Eye" that show a hint of their great live show. I caught them at SXSW....Great record and great band.

You know that feeling you get when you take a chance on something and it turns out to be a fantastic decision?

That's how I felt after buying this album.

I had already known about the song Overflow for some time (thank you Pandora) but somehow it never occurred to me to listen to more of Conner's stuff. I'm more or less a fan of music in general, but I'll admit I have a predisposition towards indie and classic rock. I spotted glimpses of similarity to many of my favorite bands all over this album, from Pink Floyd (Toluene) to The Strokes (Silent Film Score, Window Shopping, She Tells No Lies) to maybe even a little Cake (Enough for You and Me).

The lead singer James Duft has a very retro quality to his voice; Floating on Error sounds almost a little like Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds, without the synth. At least once or twice his voice also reminded me a little of Joe Strummer of The Clash.

Some might see these similarities as a lack of originality. After a few listens, I might even agree with you at times. But at no point does this blatant influence ever get in the way. All of their songs are united by a charming simplicity and understatedness, and somehow Conner pulls their influences together into a cohesive whole; sometimes they may sound like the Strokes, but never do they cease to sound like Conner. And that's fine by me.

All in all, a great and very catchy record, and it's going to see some serious use from me in the future. If you've been lucky enough to stumble upon this album, please do yourself a favor and pick it up so you can experience that "I just made a great decision" feeling for yourself.
