Wintersleep has spent a decade establishing, developing, & re-inventing their sound to share with audiences around the world. Characterized by resonant harmonies, rich layers of elaborate instrumentation & ear-catching melodies, the Nova Scotian band produces music that has the ability to grab listeners with its pop charm and keep them captivated with its subtle complexities. Wintersleep's 2012 album, Hello Hum; a product of the member's collective experiences, waking dreams, and musical experimentations; signifies a new chapter in the band's history.

I have eagerly awaited every release by these east coast phenoms since I was introduced to 2007's "Welcome to the Night Sky". It remains one of the favorite albums that I own, and the outstanding musicianship, combined with intelligent and well written lyrics keep it in regular rotation on my ipod. 2010's "New Inheritors" was good, but not quite as interesting to me, with a little less of the catchy melodies that drew me to Welcome to the Night Sky. Now, "Hello Hum" promises to become as big a favorite as "Welcome" and each and every song is crafted carefully and with much love. Tracks "In Came the Flood" is excellent, as is "Unzipper", and "Zones", and the three are connected by being the harder rocking ones, but even the slower ones are excellent, keeping my interest with the great lyrics. I've been listening to it for a few days, and am appreciating it more and more. I'll write a follow up if the loves diminishes, but I doubt it...

Hello Hum echos back to previous greatness that seemed to have been side-stepped in Wintersleep's last release New Inheritors. I am a HUGE fan of Welcome to the Night Sky and to their first proper release (the untitled Wintersleep) which isn't even offered here on Amazon, which is a tremendous loss- what with intense and intimate songs like "Lipstick" and "A Long Flight", "Listen (Listen, Listen"), "Fog" and "Jaws of Life". Go to their website, do whatever you must, to obtain these songs. And their "I Will Be a Monster" (or maybe it's "Orca", ?, on their 1st first cd I can't even find) isn't on any recording that I know of-- but find it. Their 2nd cd Welcome to the Night Sky was more of the same gauzy yet loud, personal yet everyman essential listening ("Weighty Ghost" [find the acoustic version and do your best to decide which version you like most- both are excellent], "Drunk on Aluminum", et al). I originally downloaded some of their earlier stuff but realized I had to have hardcopy in hand and bought everything of theirs. Next came New Inheritors, which I pre-ordered, only to listen to it numerous times and have nothing lodge in my mind. I know there were change-ups in the band members on New Inheritors so maybe that was it... or maybe they wanted a new direction so as not to come off as one note and not reaching... maybe they had exorcised all demons on previous recordings and had no more catharsis to muck through. Personally, I loved their muck. Most likely the band is very proud and happy with New Inheritors and it is just me.

But now we have the new Hello Hum. Give it time to do its work. You'll wake up one morning to find that during the night, certain songs were working their quite hooks into you as you slept. Now they are a part of who you are.
