Not What You Think,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash [CBS] (Album)
As others have noted, this is not the very worthwhile 1970 release, but an identically-titled shoddy hodge podge from the '90's. The confusion is compounded by Sony's continuing refusal to reissue the 1970 album, which has never been available on CD. Wait and buy the 1970 album if it's ever reissued, but even completists should skip this one.
As of this date, Amazon has been informed and has acknowledged that the song titles listed under this entry are incorrect but has, so far, not taken down the listing or corrected the songs. This is disgraceful.

Very Disappointed....NOT The 1970 Release,

This review is from: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash [CBS] (Album)
I, too, am a member of the Johnny Cash forum at www.johnnycash.com and was very disappointed when I received this reissue of a CD that has been available for quite some time now. When I first heard of this release, I called Amazon to confirm the track listing was correct and was reassured that it was. But, when I received the CD today, it was not the release of Johnny's 1970 "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" LP. I am sure that this is a HUGE disappointment to all Johnny Cash fans :(

I also ordered this cd & received "the other" Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. I think Amazon needs to straighten this out. I would ask this much:
1) Tell us if you have in your inventory The Hello I'm Johnny Cash cd that is advertised here with the songs that are listed in :see track listings? 2) If not please delete it! 3) If you do have it devise a way for customers to be assured they will get the cd they order.

Like the other reviewers, I recieved the wrong CD. As such, the 3 star rating is a compromise between my opinion of the shipping situation and my opinion of the recording I'm trying to obtain.
The recording which was advertised is 5 star and then some. One of the best of Johnny's career, the origional LP has long held an honored place in my collection, even the liner notes are incredible. It has been impossible to find in recent yrs, and never before released on CD. This only makes the problems so many customers are experiencing all the more frustrating. Amazon has been responsive and helpful as always and I've been told the proper CD will be shipping soon. If there is a silver lining to this now well known mishap it is that the reaction of customers may arouse the curiosity of people who discovered Johnny Cash after this LP/tape had disappeared from view in the 1970s. This recording is well worth the effort it is taking to own it, and I suspect that view will be shared by anyone who enjoys Johnny's music, including those whose primary exposure has been via the American Recordings. In many respects "Hello I'm Johnny Cash" foreshadowed 'Solitary Man' and 'The Man Comes Around' far more than any of his other studio recordings from the late 1960s/early 1970s.

Amazon "CORRECT" this listing!,

This CD is NOT the (1970) release as stated in the description of it's song/track title listing. It is a reissue of a compilation from Sony. It is on the "Collectible" series label. "WAKE-UP" Amazon and "CORRECT" this listing! How many customers do you need to return this product & inform you of it not being what is advertised before you "correct" the listing?!
:(

I am a member of the Johnny Cash forum at www.johnnycash.com. Fans of Johnny's have long anticipated the release of Johnny's 1970 "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" on CD. The Johnny Cash forum is abuzz right now as members are disappointed to be recieving a reissue of the 1995 compilation CD by the same name. The CD advertised here is not the one being recieved by fans. The mystery is how Amazon (and other online sellers) recieved the track listing for the long awaited album, but are actually selling a reissue of a compilation CD available for over 10 years.

I recieved a best of instead,

I recieved a best of instead of the classic Hello I'm Johnny Cash album which is what I expected. I honestly don't think that Hello I'm Johnny Cash, the early 70's classic album was actually released. This is a best of early 60's tunes which you can get anywhere. I agree with above review that the hello' I'm Johnny cash album with Devil to pay, etc. is a classic one of his best, but this is not that album. Once again I repeat that Cd has not been released

Disappointed,
This review is from: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash [CBS] (Album)
Twice they have sent me the wrong CD. They keep sending out the Priceless Collection Hello I'm Johnny Cash. This is the same as the 1995 Sony Hello I'm Johnny Cash which has 14 different tracks. Unfortunately that is not the Original "Hello I'm Johnny Cash" which is the one above. Still hoping to get the Original because it has some great songs on it.

This review is from: Hello I'm Johnny Cash (Audio CD)
This is not the "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" album originally released in 1970. This is a collection of Cash favorites released by Sony in 1992. A common error concerning this CD.However, the music is excellent if you're an old Johnny Cash fan as I am. All of the tracks are songs that were recorded under the Columbia label (none of the old Sun stuff here!). From "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" (from Cash's first Columbia sessions) to "Man In Black" (from the first release following the end of Cash's TV show in the 70's), you'll find a diverse selection of Johnny's best.

Why Is this not available on CD?,
This review is from: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash (Columbia KCS 9943) (Vinyl)
With the Fulsom Prison album catapulting Johnny Cash back into the lime light and back into the minds and ears of people who knew his talent from the Sun Years, we get this mind-blowing album. The sound has changed since the death of Luther Perkins, but there's a familiarity there makes one feel at home with Johnny Cash. And the songs! There's a song about the death of Viet Nam soldier, a girlfriend turned prostitute, a warning to a wayward love that she's still got "the Devil to Pay," and a straight up love song. There's a song that's arguably the best duet with June Carter EVER, a hot song about arousal, a train song, a song written by Kris Kristofferson, and a song about Jesus. What's not to love about this ground breaking album?
If you still have this one on vinyl and still have a turn table, I suggest you put it on and give it a listen. I gaurantee you'll remember why you bought it. This album is so good it almost makes you forget about the Sun years and all the amazing songs that came from those legendary sessions. If you're one of those people who are lucky enough to have the Bear Family box set entitled "The Man in Black 1963-1969" then you are most fortunate to own this set of music on CD. The costly price of that 6 CD set is worth it just for the 12 songs on this album. It's also interesting to note an amazing version of a song called "The Folk Singer" which was recorded a year or so before the tracks on this album. It would have fit easily on this record. We hear Cash singing some of the most original country music ever recorded. The subject matter of the songs richly deviates from the usual country topics which elevates the record beyond most country albums ever recorded. One would think whoever had the rights to the songs on this album would have had the good sense to release this album on CD. I know the fans would have eaten it up. It probably would have sold enough to put it in the top 200 or something. But alas, no one but Bear Family records have released it on CD. If you have a hundred fifty on you, shell it out and get that box set. You won't regret it. |
