About the Author

Pam Muñoz Ryan is a native of California. While growing up in the San Joaquin Valley, she spent much of her time in the local air-conditioned library to escape the scorching heat. It was there that she discovered her lifelong love of books.

Pam received her bachelor's and master's degrees at San Diego State University. She worked as a bilingual teacher and an early childhood administrator before dedicating herself full-time to writing. She wrote her first book at the age of thirty-two at the encouragement of a friend. She has written many picture books for young children and recently completed her first novel for older students.

The Flag We Love (Charlesbridge, 1996) was inspired by a brief incident in the grocery store where Pam witnessed a disrespectful use of the American flag. She was concerned when this incident went unnoticed by her children and other shoppers. Pam was inspired to write a "sentimental, apolitical, and not Yankee Doodle Dandy-ish" picture book for children with simple text and beautiful illustrations. Pam researched historical facts for the book through libraries, the Smithsonian Institute, and NASA. Other books by Pam Muñoz Ryan include, The Crayon Counting Book (Charlesbridge, 1996), California Here We Come! (Charlesbridge, 1997), A Pinky is a Baby Mouse (Hyperion, 1996) and Riding Freedom (Scholastic Press, 1998).

Pam lives in California, with her husband and four children. She often speaks at schools and conferences about writing and literacy.

Illustrator:
Mark Astrella is a self-taught artist who has drawn and painted most of his life. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Mark learned most of his technique by looking at art in his hometown art museum and by studying books, comic books, and science fiction magazines.

Mark is very versatile and has worked with many different media. He has been creating graphic designs professionally since high school. He has freelanced for advertising agencies, magazines, small businesses, and sign companies. He has also toured the United States as a lighting technician for rock 'n' roll bands, theatre productions, television, and corporate trade shows.

Mark collaborated with Jerry Pallotta on The Butterfly Alphabet Book (Charlesbridge, 1995) and The Desert Alphabet Book (Charlesbridge, 1994). He plans to continue to illustrate children's books.

Mark loves to travel and has seen most of North and South America. He currently resides in Hawaii.

The best and most beautifully written bi-lingual children's book.
Pictures are beautiful and enchant my 18month old.
The wording is poetic in both the english version and spanish version.
Great, great book. I have bought several to give to friends wanting to learn spanish and teach their children.

This review is from: Hello Ocean / Hola Mar (Paperback)
My family is half White, half Mexican, half English-speaking, half-Spanish speaking. We also live next to the shore in Southern California. This book beautifully reflected the lived experience of our children.
