Pam received her bachelor's and master's degrees at San Diego State University. She worked as a bilingual teacher and an early childhood administrator before dedicating herself full-time to writing. She wrote her first book at the age of thirty-two at the encouragement of a friend. She has written many picture books for young children and recently completed her first novel for older students.
The Flag We Love (Charlesbridge, 1996) was inspired by a brief incident in the grocery store where Pam witnessed a disrespectful use of the American flag. She was concerned when this incident went unnoticed by her children and other shoppers. Pam was inspired to write a "sentimental, apolitical, and not Yankee Doodle Dandy-ish" picture book for children with simple text and beautiful illustrations. Pam researched historical facts for the book through libraries, the Smithsonian Institute, and NASA. Other books by Pam Muñoz Ryan include, The Crayon Counting Book (Charlesbridge, 1996), California Here We Come! (Charlesbridge, 1997), A Pinky is a Baby Mouse (Hyperion, 1996) and Riding Freedom (Scholastic Press, 1998).
Pam lives in California, with her husband and four children. She often speaks at schools and conferences about writing and literacy.

This review is from: Hello Ocean / Hola Mar (Paperback)
The best and most beautifully written bi-lingual children's book.
Pictures are beautiful and enchant my 18month old. The wording is poetic in both the english version and spanish version. Great, great book. I have bought several to give to friends wanting to learn spanish and teach their children.

This review is from: Hello Ocean / Hola Mar (Paperback)
My family is half White, half Mexican, half English-speaking, half-Spanish speaking. We also live next to the shore in Southern California. This book beautifully reflected the lived experience of our children.
