4.0 out of 5 stars A Hiring Manager's View, May 22, 2006

This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
I am a hiring manager in a major corporation that actively recruits and hires interns and co-ops. I recommend that aspiring summer interns and those who want year-round co-op positions read Jengyee's book. It will prepare you for finding the internship or co-op position that suits your needs and it will give you insight on what your employer expects from you. Jengyee's experiences (both the positive and not-so-positive) show students that they can and must be proactive in creating the work experience that they will learn from and enjoy. Her book is full of contemporary and accurate information written from the heart of someone who has recently experienced it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Key to Success, March 5, 2006

This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
This book changed my attitude towards the recruiting process. I started putting more effort and time into internship hunting and treating it as a "4-unit" class. Tips about interviews, you might say, can be found anywhere. But messages Jengyee is sending can help you see the recruiting process from a different angle. I successfully obtained coop from IBM, and I will be an intern at Microsoft this summer. I strongly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars really a good book for all, April 21, 2006
This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
Got Jengyee's book form my cousin. She told me it would be a "useful" book, especially for me---a junior in college.
I found that's true after I read it. Jengyee's book is easy to read which is good for someone like me whose native language is not english. Meanwhile,I learnd so much from her personal experiences and wise advices. The tips offered are applicable to all. I hope I could found this book earlier.
The truth is Jengyee's book is shining. if u don't believe, get one asap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Organization Rules!, June 6, 2006

This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
Stating that the author really knows her stuff about career investigation would be a colossal understatement. In this book Jengyee Liang shows that anyone can land a great job if they are only willing to get organized and maintain their self discipline.

As an HR professional I've seen many college students flounder in both the interview and the job environment. The reasons they fail range from simple ignorance of corporate behavior to an inability to change their mindset from that of a student. Jengyee addresses a great deal of these types of issues as she walks you through, step-by-step, from the initial interest in a career field all the way through to how to act on the job itself. Throughout she shows a great amount of insight as to how the corporate machine operates.

Some of her advice I like most includes:

* It's a numbers game - the more companies you see and interview - the more likely you are to land a great position.
* Grades and college clubs can get you in the door but they alone won't buy your way into a quick career path.
* Preparation is the key to standing out from the crowd both in the interview and on the job.
* Social networks are every bit as important as your work habits. Having one without the other will often result in an unhappy job experience.
* Always remember to keep the main thing the main thing. Side projects on the job are a great way to expand your knowledge, just don't let them divert your attention from your main duties.

"Hello Real World" is a great first effort and we should look forward to many more great things from the author in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest Career Advice, April 9, 2006
This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
This book is the most honest and thoughtful summary of a college student's internship and first-job experiences. The author's anecdotes and experiences summarize knowledge I wish I had known during my college years. I highly recommend this book for those currently seeking internships or entry-level positions. You will not find this level of honesty or personal advice in other resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all college students, April 8, 2006

HRW is a thorough and concise guide to building a successful career. These first steps are the most important, and Jengyee guides you from the beginning to end: the job search to the work experience. Jengyee does not hesitate to give you inside tips. In fact, this book acts like a portal that pulls together all aspects of career development tips into a context for college students. Jengyee and I were classmates at UC Berkeley, and I read this book rather quickly (two hours) because it reiterated our understanding of the real world that we, along with our classmates, developed together. Reading this book feels like a private chat between my best friend sharing her best advice about a big step in our lives. It felt nostalgic. Our views of the real world have brought both of us awesome careers. Forthcoming and succinct, this book covers the career building experience in breadth and depth, and she leaves no stones unturned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete yet concise how-to guide, March 3, 2006

Ah, how I wish I'd had access to advice like this during my student years! In this book, the author concisely summarizes three internships and landing an entry-level position at P&G. I would recommend this book to anyone getting ready to start college and stress one of the same points the author does: start preparing for an internship NOW! I also found the author's advice on balancing the "work-horse" mindset and the "social butterfly" mindset to be a timely reminder that I need to spend more of my lunches with my work-mates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable read, May 21, 2006
This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
This is a great book that, as others have mentioned, I should have read years before now, perhaps sometime in late high school or early college. It gives a student's perspective to the internship and full-time job process, which makes the material more comfortable and sincere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for college students, April 6, 2006
This review is from: Hello Real World!: A Student'S Approach To Great Internships Co-Ops And Entry Level Positions (Paperback)
Had I read this book while still in college, I probably wouldn't be stuck in this deadbeat job. Well... all jokes aside (sorta), this book is a fantastic resource for students seeking internships and jobs after graduation. Jengyee offers sound advice on acing job interviews and good tips for resume builders. HRW is loaded with useful information that ought to be taught to students but isn't. Read this book now!
