Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—A little girl wonders about her not-yet-born sibling, reassuring and encouraging the baby by telling of all the good things waiting out in the world ("like strawberries and cupcakes-my favorites!"). The child appears on the recto of each spread while her mother's belly is shown growing larger on the verso. Youngsters can lift a flap to see the developing fetus against imaginative backgrounds. Childlike drawings with cleverly used white space and colorful images create suspense leading up to the moment when big sister and baby finally, happily meet. Preschoolers will enjoy this sweet story.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

I wanted to find a good big sibling book for our daughter, but I had a really hard time finding any that I liked enough to buy. Most had terrible artwork. Many focus on how boring babies are or how it stinks to get less attention. Many were so focused on teaching a lesson that they do nothing to engage the child.

This one, however, was perfect. The artwork is simple and appealing. And, the book focuses on the thoughts and emotions of the child who is waiting for their brother or sister to arrive. The big sister talks about her concern for the baby ("is it dark in there?"), singing to the baby, feeling connected to the baby, and enthusiasm for meeting the baby and sharing her favorite things. And, the flaps that reveal the slowly growing baby on each page are just an added bonus that keep my daughter even more engaged.

My 2-year-old loves this book. She identifies with the main character and loves that it's more interactive, with flaps to lift, than other "big sister" books I've seen. The illustrations are simple but imaginative. I love that the mama's belly and baby "grow" as you go through the book, so we can talk about how the baby is growing and actually see that represented. This book would be my top pick for a big sister-to-be who is at least 2 years old.

This book was a gift to my 3 y/o great niece who will become a big sister in 6 months! My niece-in-law has told me that she has had to read this book to her daughter nightly since receiving it because she loves it so much! My niece-in-law loves the presentation of what is happening as her tummy grows during her pregnancy. Her daughter can see as she opens the flaps on each page what is happening as the new baby grows in her Mommy's tummy! She highly recommends this book for siblings waiting to become big sisters. As a side to this review, my great niece loves receiving mail, so I had this book mailed directly to her!! The book was received in great condition before date specified.

This terrific book was a gift for my niece, who has a 2.5 year old and is now pregnant with twins. The book was not easy to locate, so was ordered from England through Amazon; it arrived just fine. As my niece started reading the book to her daughter, the child cheerfully exclaimed, "that's for the baby" (as she is beginning to understand her mom is pregnant). The real vote of confidence came when the 2 year old said she liked the book! The lift "peekaboo" tabs inside make it interesting. The book is not too complicated for the approximately 2-4 year old age range, although Mom or Dad may need to assist with the tabs. Simple, in good taste, and interesting, this book is recommended.

I picked up a series of sibling books from the library for my soon to be two year old in preparation for our upcoming addition. I agree with a prior reviewer; most focus on the negative aspects of being a sibling after the baby is born and end with the child eventually getting used to/learning to love the baby. This book has a positive message and focuses on the anticipation during pregnancy and ends when the baby is born. My daughter LOVES this book and asks to read it nearly every night. She loves to open the flaps and talk baby talk to the illustrated baby. It cracks me up every time :). She gets very excited at the end when the baby is born and the main character is finally a big sister. I actually came on Amazon today to buy the book for her. One downside is that the flaps require nails to open when new and are difficult for frustrated little fingers.

This is a wonderful book. Bought it for my 2 year old granddaughter who will be a big sister shortly; it works for her but she is definitely on the young side for this book. She loves to open the flaps and see the baby in mama's belly. The belly and the baby grow bigger on each page, while the child in the book does things that my granddaughter can do for her own baby sister while waiting, like sing to her. There is a page where the child is waiting and the mama is gone, and the next page parents come home with the baby. Everything is happy and sweet. At 2 my granddaughter is having a little difficulty understanding what is going to happen...this book is a great tool to help her. I was a child therapist for over 30 years, taught preschool, and raised 5 children (including preparing them for the birth of their siblings). I have never seen a better book for this purpose and highly recommend it. The only possible criticism is that the flaps are a little flimsy (at least for a 2 year old...not like the toddler lift-the-flap books). Which means it is best to read it with the child instead of giving her free access to the book. But this book is best read with an adult anyway, so that is such a minor problem that it hardly matters. Art is simple and child friendly. Book is easy to read. We love it.

This is one of my toddlers favorite "new baby" books. It's adorable and she loves to lift the flap and see how the baby is growing in the mommy's tummy. This is definitely a "talk it through" book - you can't just read the words printed on the page, you have to explain what's going on in each picture. I would highly recommend this book to parents of toddler/preschool girls who are expecting a sibling!
