Editorial Reviews

Review

The novel is simply stunning. A masterpiece it is, by any definition, and fully satisfying for the reader on several levels. The author says he put sweat and tears into the research behind this work of historical fiction, set in Africa in 1898, but what he does not say is this: Mr. Parker is an author's author. His writing is disciplined and masterful, intelligent, human, and full of the spirit that only an artist who loves to write can deliver in his or her work.

Hell's Gate combines history, action, adventure and romance into one highly entertaining package. The characters are well drawn and engaging. As a bonus, there are lyric descriptions of Kenya's Rift Valley. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Author

I have always described the category of HELL'S GATE as 'Historic'. In a sense, this is true, but this category usually implies, to me at least, a novel about the middle ages or later, but probably no later than the eighteenth century. I have tried to describe it a 'Colonial History' too, but colonial could be anywhere in the world where the great powers established their empires. Recently I promoted the book as 'Action & Adventure', and realised that this was the category in which this book should be placed. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

I have been writing thrillers for many years and have experienced the highs and lows of being a writer. My first novel, NORTH SLOPE was published in 1980, and is now available as a POD paperback and Kindle on Amazon. I have been married to Patricia for fifty four years and we live in Spain. We have four sons, ten grandchildren and one great grandson. My hobby is writing, of course, and to date I have had eight novels published. You can see my list in Author Central. My other hobbies are snooker, speedway, football and music. I play snooker, watch football and speedway, and play the keyboard (not too well). I am a born again Christian and played keyboard in my fellowship for several years. I worked as a maintenance technician most of my adult life, serving sixteen years in the Royal Air Force, and about seventeen years with a food manufacturer. I retired in 1996 (I was fifty five years old) and moved out to Spain a year later. Pat and I have lived here, on the Costa Blanca for seventeen years. We are now planning to return to the UK. Other jobs I have done include Merchant Seaman, Office boy, and general maintenance for a chicken farmer! I have received many excellent comments about my writing, but the proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating. I am a member of the International Thriller Writers and used to be a contributing editor with them. In 2009, I worked on a global project with eleven other writers and produced a novel called PASSAGE TO REDEMPTION. This is now available as a POD novel and Kindle by Acclaimed Books Ltd. (www.acclaimedbooks.com) of which I am an associate. For those of you who want to know a little more about me, and see me 'in the flesh', check out my website at www.michaeljparker.com, where you'll be able to see a couple of TV interviews I have had. My last thriller novel titled THE BOY FROM BERLIN was released in December 2011. It has been picked up by Harlequin who have purchased (leased) the English language paperback rights for North America and Canada. This has been published (2013) now in paperback. Meannwhile my current paperbacks; NORTH SLOPE, a COVERT WAR ROSELLI'S GOLD, HELL'S GATE, THE DEVIL'S TRINITY, and SHADOW OF THE WOLF (March 2013) are available on Amazon and Kindle. THE EAGLE'S COVENANT paperback is available on Amazon.co.uk only because Harlequin have now agreed to publish THE EAGLE'S COVENANT in USA and Canada. This is a story set in modern Germany. It is one of my favourites and I have high hopes for it on the American market. My latest title, PAST IMPERFECT will be published by my London publisher, Hale, in 2014. This is a romance with a rough edged back story. Something of a change from my other titles.

I was intrigued by prolific author Michael Parker's repertoire of novels across genres and did not know where to begin. All the descriptions of his books appealed to me. Finally, I read that he considers Hell's Gate his masterpiece, so I could think of no better place to start than with the book the author is most proud.

The novel is simply stunning. A masterpiece it is, by any definition, and fully satisfying for the reader on several levels. The author says he put sweat and tears into the research behind this work of historical fiction, set in Africa in 1898, but what he does not say is this: Mr. Parker is an author's author. I know next to nothing about African history and its colonial period, and I have never visited the continent. This is probably true for most readers. However, there is no need to be intimidated by a personal lack of background. The novel informs as it moves at a perfect pace. In addition, it is a total sensory experience that sets the reader in another place in time, complete with the smells, noises, feelings and visual experience of everything in that world. Hell's Gate is replete with descriptive imagery, but never to the point where this becomes distracting or annoying. Here is just one small example from the novel:

"They turned to look at the lake. The ground sloped gently into the water. There was no indication on the surface that the water was bleeding away. A squacco heron picked its way carefully among the beds of papyrus reeds searching for food, ignoring the pied wagtails that bobbed from one lily pad to another.

This book was so terribly predictable. The good guys always won, the baddies always lost and the hero got the girl.

This is an old-fashioned red-blooded African adventure. One can easily imagine Stewart Granger in the lead role. A Western in East Africa. Nasty villains, restive natives, love triangles, noble missionaries, heroic lives and deaths. I enjoyed this at 4 stars, 3 because the writing was serviceable but not yet Wilbur Smith
