The Hellsing Ultimate OVA (2006) continues the popular vampire broadcast series Hellsing (2001), both of which were based on a manga by Kouta Hirano. Deadly vampires and ghouls are stalking England, which means Sir Integra Hellsing and her minions must take them out. The overwrought duel between Hellsing's super-vampire Arucard and Father Alexander Anderson, a bio-engineered vampire in the service of the Vatican's murderous Iscariot Organization, gets put on hold when the Valentine Brothers, Jan and Luke, lead an all-ghoul army in an assault on Sir Integra's stronghold. Arucard, the newly recruited "Draculina" Seras, and Walter the Butler defeat the invaders amid buckets of blood. Hellsing and the leader of the Iscariot Organization discover the force behind the attack is the Millennium Brigade, a cadre of Nazis who moved their research program involving the undead to South America after World War II--with the assistance of the pope. As the first half of the OVA ends, the Nazis launch an attack on Britain--incongruously setting off in zeppelins. Ultimate is a veritable gore fest, serving up even more violence than the original program. Characters are dismembered, bodies torn apart, eyes gouged, and corpses devoured. But it's not a particularly original series: the shooting effects are copied from Terminator 2, while the ghouls recall The Night of the Living Dead. These first four episodes waste more blood and bullets than a Charles Bronson film festival. The filmmakers seem to be out to offend everyone and they largely succeed, climaxing with a Nazi officer declaring, "I love holocausts." (Rated TV MA, appropriate for ages 18 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, sadism, grotesque imagery, tobacco use, extensive profanity, potentially offensive religious imagery, ethnic slurs) --Charles Solomon

Product Description

Remember when vampires had fangs? Remember when they were known as terrifying monsters that stalked the night, instead of moody teenagers that sparkle in daylight? It's time to drive a stake through the lovesick heart of contemporary vampire nonsense. Satisfy your bloodlust with Hellsing Ultimate, the definitive action-horror anime.

The rogue vampire Alucard is the Hellsing Organization's deadliest instrument in its mission to protect the British Empire from satanic ghouls and Nazi freaks. He is not alone in his assault on the occult; the master has a servant. Policewoman Seras Victoria accepted Alucard's gift of dark salvation after falling in the line of duty, and now the remnants of her human soul struggle against her growing vampire urges. Together, they haunt the shadows as a sinister force of good - and tonight the foggy streets of England shall flow with the blood of their evil prey.

Hellsing Ultimate is an OVA reboot, that follows the manga more precisely as opposed to the 2001 TV Series, the art style of the show is also more faithful to the manga and none of the violence is toned down like the original was. Don't get me wrong the original TV series was bloody and brual, but its not as graphic and detailed as this new OVA. For example in the OVA they go as far to show chunks of flesh and brain splattering on the walls and people being decapitated and there intestines being ripped out. This series started in 2006 and is still ongoing, so far 9 OVA's have been released in japan, each are approximately 45-50 minutes long. In December of 2006 Geneon had begun releasing this series in the U.S., but unfortunately they went under on December 2007 and only 4 OVA's had been released at that time and so only 4 were dubbed. Then along came Funimation who announced that they have acquired Hellsing Ultimate OVA's 1-7 at Anime Expo 2010. Due to the fact that Geneon had started merging with Universal entertainment Japan that same year, because of this merging process, Funimation wasn't able to begin dubbing the new episodes and so it was put on hold. At the same time in 2011 they also acquired OVA #8. The merging process is now over with and Funimation can start releasing these OVA's at a good price( check on amazon and ebay, the sellers on there are selling this series for a ridiculous price, as much as $70 for one episode). Keep in mind that these are re-releases and they will started releasing dubbed/subbed episodes of OVA's 5-8 after this set comes out on October 16, 2012(the perfect anime to watch around Halloween). This set comes with both a Blu-ray copy and as well as a DVD copy. It'll have both the fantastic English dub and Japanese with subtitles. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dub Ever! September 5, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Theres a lot of stigma floating around out there that dubs are basically trash and all "real" anime fans only watch subs. While I dont neccisarily agree with this, I have started to latley feel as though Japanese voice actors are for the most part superior. Not in every anime, but usually the original Japanese voices just seem more natural to me.

Hellsing however is the one anime where the english dub absolutley blows the japanese voice cast out of the water. Not that there arent superior english dubs out there, but Hellsing is the only one Ive seen that goes absolutlet uncontested. Crispin Freeman is incredible as Alucard (between him and Morgan people with the last name Freeman just seem to have awesome voices).

Steven Brand also did an exellent job as Alexander Anderson. But really I want to praise the whole cast, particularly those who worked with accents and different ethnicities. Whether its British, Itallian, German, french, or Irish, the whole cast handled them very well.

As far as the anime itself goes Ill just say that its amazing, Ultimate Hellsing is the standard I hold all anime reboots to now. Its exactly what the fans wanted and what the series deserved. The animeation is incredible, the action scenes are breathtaking, and they actually included a lot fo the comic relief that was left out of the original anime.

Shit not only is Ultimate Hellsing better than the original anime, it might be better than the manga. The cast is just that good.

Anyway this is a great anime, and five stars just arent enough. And btw this is a great price for a dvd/blu ray combo, especially since anime is usually pretty expensive.

Let me start off by saying that this is one of Funimation's most comprehensive releases to date. Normally Funimation's releases are very bare-bones with literally no bonus features besides the occasional commentary track. This release, however, is incredibly comprehensive. It includes an entire Blu Ray disc filled with bonus features, not to mention the full length commentaries on all 4 OVAs! Simply fantastic!

On to a review of the OVAs:
If you do not like Japanese humor, extremely gory shows, and a good amount of camp...then you've come to the wrong place, my friend. This has abundant amounts of all of these things. Also, if you are looking for the serious tone of the original Hellsing series you should also look elsewhere. However, if you are looking to turn your brain off for a few hours for a spectacular show of vampires vs Nazi zombies, look no further than Hellsing Ultimate. It is a faithful adaptation of the manga, and is definitely worth any fan's time. This is the definitive Hellsing experience.

Btw, even if you aren't a fan of English dubs, give this one a listen. The English version is, in my opinion, far superior to the original!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't sleep on this one!! January 30, 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This show is incredible in every possible aspect. Not only does it give you the first 4 OVAs on Blu Ray, but DVD as well. In all honesty the extra content within is almost irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, however if you're big on bonus features this collection features over 200 minutes worth of bonus features. The show itself is obviously the main attraction. There's a lot of talk about excessive amounts of gore and profanity strewn about the show but in all honesty it adds to the serious and mature presentation of the show. I was a casual fan of the classic Hellsing series when it aired on TV late at night back in the day. Hellsing Ultimate is a reboot that is more true to the manga. In all honesty it completely blows the classic series out of the water. The day this set arrived I watched all 4 episodes in one sitting. I don't want to spoil the plot as my objective is to merely tell you that this is not an OVA you want to pass up. Over the years I've grown out of the 'anime craze.' With so many different ones starting up (some even being cut without being finished) it's just too much to keep up with. I tend to stick with the classics I grew up with. Those that have seen the Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood series will have a general understanding of the more modern animation style that is present in Hellsing Ultimate. A few people were asking which series to start with. Truth be told it doesn't really matter as they both have their own beginning and end. I do think most people, myself included would direct any newcomers to the franchise to this particular series as it's the most true to form.
This is Hellsing the way it was meant to be seen. These are the first of 10 OVAs (as of this posting V-VIII are available here on Amazon as well).

If I only mildly liked the original Anime will I like this reboot better?
I highly doubt it but if your a hardcore Hellsing fan on the mangas like me then you would enjoy this greatly. Try reading the manga and see if you like it anymore, because at some point in the original TV show, it was kind of following the manga but not really, and the company decided to go a... Read More

180 Minutes on 5 discs?
Two Blu-Rays and three DVD's I believe, which comes to 180 minutes for the episodes on Blu-Ray which means it's also on DVD which brings it to 360 minutes + special features on all five discs. Misprint? Not a chance.
