I haven't had to put this dialer through the "acid test", meaning an actual emergency, but it worked fine when I did a couple of test runs with it. The unit has two ways of responding to an emergency signal: either dialing the list of phone numbers you program into it, or by sounding a fairly loud local alarm. If the local alarm's not loud enough, you can buy a separate alarm box to hook into this unit that will blast an earth-shatteringly loud alarm that's sure to wake up everyone in the house and get them coming to your aid. The dialer function is activated by a pull-ring on the pendant that's reminiscent of the pull-pin on a hand grenade. The local alarm is set off by a push-button on the pendant. The pendant's signal range seemed good; the dialer responded to it even when the pendant was activated on a different floor of the house and from about 70 feet away.

The owner's manual is pretty simple and it's easy to program numbers into the machine. Don't refer to the "quick start" instructions, because they're not really accurate; you'll think you're programming multiple numbers into the machine but you'll be erasing numbers each time you put in a new one. One thing the manual doesn't mention is that the 20-second recorded message gets repeated three times when the dialer calls the numbers. That's a benefit as far as I'm concerned because it might take a while for someone to figure out what the call's about if they get dialed up in the middle of the night.

One thing that would make this unit a lot better would be a display which shows which numbers have been programmed into it. As it is now, the only way you know if you have it programmed correctly is to do a test run with it, which can be pretty inconvenient for the people whose numbers you have programmed into it.

Seemed nicely put together and instructions were good but I returned solely on the basis of pendant with it's ring that you actually pull out being 1) too difficult for my Mom to pull out and 2) concern that the ring would get lost
