Book Description

11 and up6 and up
An indispensable survival guide and source of support, Help! My Teacher Hates Me! provides solutions and strategies for dealing with the problems and issues every student confronts in school.

Taking a sensitive, kid-friendly, but no-nonsense approach, the book tackles an array of common and not-so-common problems, from teacher predicaments and report-card troubles to dealing with a fellow student with AIDS. It addresses tensions between friends, the great cheating dilemma, homework, family attention, sports and other extracurricular activities, and actual physical fears.

The author, who specializes in helping teenagers explore sensitive and emotional issues, is a writer with a master's degree in counseling psychology. In this book, she is as accessible as a private counselor, ever willing to listen and ever knowledgeable in what to do. Whether the problem is small or large, she carefully outlines all the steps that should be taken to address it. It may feel like the end of the world, but it's not-HELP! has arrived. Selection of the Scholastic Book Clubs. Suitable for ages 9-14.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5^-8. Respect the school experience; think things through; accept responsibility for personal actions. To those reasonable basics, Schneider adds good-sense advice on a host of school-related concerns, from cheating and teacher woes to slipping grades and sports hassles. In keeping with changes in school atmosphere, she has also included information on AIDS as a factor in the student population, physical assault on campus, and sexual harassment by a teacher. If Schneider is a bit too wordy, she makes up for it nicely by presenting issues from a broad perspective: along with the feelings and responses of the student, she considers how others involved in a given situation may be expected to act. A book that will definitely help kids navigate school corridors more smoothly. Cartoon drawings lighten up the serious stuff. Stephanie Zvirin

From the Back Cover

Help! is here

· You and a partner are assigned a project-only he's doing nothing and you're working double-time.

· Your parents think you're hanging out with a wild crowd. They're telling you not to see those kids anymore.

· Your teacher gave you a disappointing grade on your best research paper.

· You were excited to make the varsity baseball team . . . but at game time you're warming the bench

· You and your best friend both auditioned for the school play. Great, except she got the lead and you part's a walk-on.

Case by case, HELP! MY TEACHER HATES ME shows you how to get through junior high by taking control of your school problems. It's the book to keep in your locker for the next time it feels like you've got nowhere to turn.

Meg F. Schneider is a writer who has an M.A. in counseling psychology. Dennis Meade, Ph.D., is a psychologist who works with kids in and out of the classroom.
