Book Description

It can be difficult to know what path to take when setting up your own website. The Internet abounds with people trying to sell overpriced services ... all for things you can actually do yourself. Some examples:

- "Create a WordPress-based website using a non-custom theme" ... for 1100 dollars. (Hint: you can do this for free.)
- "Build a one-page website" ... for $225 dollars.
- "Set up a Shopify store with five listings" ... for 2300 dollars.

If you can send an email with an attachment, or sign up for a social media account and post a picture, you absolutely have the skills to do any of the above on your own. I wrote this book as a broad overview of the options available, for anyone who knows they need a website, but aren't sure where to start.

"Help, My Mom Needs a Website!" covers:

- Point-and-click site builders (including cost and ease-of-use).
- Blogging platforms (including step-by-step instructions on how to create a free website or blog)
- Portfolio sites (such as Behance, Carbonmade, and Dribbble, as well as instructions on how to create a free portfolio site using WordPress)
- Online shops. Do you need standalone shops (such as Shopify, Big Cartel, Squarespace, Tictail, or IndieMade), or is a networked shop (like Etsy) better for you? The "Set Up Shop" chapter will help you decide.

Thinking of doing it yourself, from scratch? There's also a chapter on how to create a simple starter page that will introduce you to the basics of HTML and CSS. Even if you don't end up going the DIY route, you'll be amazed how a little knowledge of these areas will help you in all kinds of scenarios.

If you're a large corporation, this isn't the book for you. But if you're an independent artist of any kind, or running a small business, or helping out a charity, it's the perfect place to start.
