Fav release of 2009 so far - melodic haunting psychedelic garage rock - very authentic sounding

There isn't a single element in this band I dislike. One of the things I appreciate most is their concern for a commonly neglected necessity in garage rock: dynamics. Just because a genre comes across as reckless and spontaneous, doesn't mean you can write uninteresting songs. On Help, songs don't just blister their way from start to finish and there are more than just clever little starts and stops. It's more like, "Hey dudes, what if we sneak in a flute solo on Meat Step Lively?" At the same time, Thee Oh Sees don't abandon the core elements of garage that make it one of my favorite genres. I'm still dancing, pumping my fist, and driving cars off cliffs.

This album absolutely Jams. As the other reviewer said, this album makes me pump my fist and I find myself wanting to smash things around me. There is energy in these songs that is fan-freaking-tastic. The album plays great from start to finish.

I have this on red vinyl (sweetness) but I will have to get the MP3s as well.

Well done Thee of Sees!!!

You need more Sees! This album is incredible music, a time bridge from Link Wray to now, and if ANYTHING will cause you to get your chores done IN RARE TIME. I froth at this stuff. This and "the master's bedroom" fit on one CDR (minus two songs...good luck picking!) and its 90 minutes of GOODNESS.

Alien Surf Music.

Before a track from this band HALTED me during a sunlit walk with smart phone radio station playing, I was JADED about music being made these days. Please allow The Oh Sees to remind you what an ALBUM sounds like. Big shout out to Dave Sitek's production...taking the rawness of the demos and applying the hammer of love. This sword SHINES.

In an attempt to not sound so fanboy-ish, I will make a few statements as a musician:

-Wonderful guitar work, not showy but VERY communicative. The band doesn't use true bass, but a second guitar that plays the "bass part." This recording (unlike others) does use acutal bass (to my ears)at times. I can say as a bassist it does not take away.

-the girl/boy effect of the vocal in these songs not only add to the songs, but causes them to stick in your head for much of the day. It is this singing that gives off a "phil spector" vibe.

-The Space Reverb Echo employed here will make you wonder why current bands only use it in over-all production, or just in vocals. But then again, whatever tool Dyer uses most likely fell from space.

-If you love analoge, and love Tubes, you will love this. The even sing thru tube amps live.



I gifted a good friend the LP version of this and he took time out to write me a letter of THANKS. The first of its kind I've ever recieved, and I bury my buddies in mix tapes.

I'm off to make a T-shirt. They would have it no other way.
