Book Description

April 25, 2011
When you become "mom" you begin a huge and some days overwhelming new job.  Like most of us you had not planned, trained or was educated for this position.  If you're anything like I was, it arrived with a good amount of anxiety, ratcheting even higher when I realized that I would be raising daughters.
The year this mom's cry for help was launched the best insights I found weren't from those that touted credentials.  It wasn't the experts in parenting, or philosophers that hadn't spent a whole day with anyone under the age of five.  It was other moms, the ones that had completed the job, possessing the bruises and knowing smile to prove it.  Their tales both entertaining and encouraging helped me the most.
These ladies took the time to explain to this young mom that motherhood was more than just one job and it was the most important one you'd ever do.  They were the ones that gave me the practical advice that really worked.  They were often the ones that by their very actions kept my head afloat making me believe all would be well.
In Help Wanted:  moms raising daughters I get the opportunity to now tell you what I learned.
This book defines 13 of the jobs that I found an absolute must:  Coach, Creative Counselor, Time Manager, Media Director, Academic Advocate, Professor of Gender Studies, Relationship Counselor, Sex Ed Teacher, Financial Consultant, Bodyguard, Communications Specialist, In-Home Demonstrator, Military Strategist.
I've included stories and strategies I developed along the way as well as some of that great advice I received from others.  I'm sure you'll find the journey of raising daughters like I did, exhilarating, terrifying, rewarding, difficult, delightful, and most days a real joy.  When the end of each day comes I can tell you is two things; you don't have to be a perfect mom to be a great mom, so go easy on yourself.  Then raising daughters is absolutely the best job you will ever have.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Now that my girls are grown I have the luxury of talking about raising daughters.  I think if I had attempted this at any point earlier in the process I would have been the most bipolar author imaginable.  As all mothers of girls know, one day all is going so well, you're a great mom, she's an amazing daughter.  The next you wonder who is this out of control child and at what point did I turn into Cruella Deville the hater of even small puppies.  Had I written it in those years one chapter would have told you it could be done well, be encouraged.  Then the very next I would have told you it was an impossible task left to someone else much smarter than I.  But now I know the end of the story.
My girls are great, they always were, just challenging at times.  I turned into a pretty good mom, made some mistakes, but none that were irreparable.  I wasn't perfect, neither were my girls, but I can look at them today and say I am so glad I took the challenge of being their mom.  I am so thankful I never gave up.  The richness of my life with these young ladies that I am so proud of is immeasurable.   The impact they both make in the worlds they work and live is my life treasure.  So, trust me when I promise you if stay the course the richness and treasure you will find with your daughter will one day be yours too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good First Release May 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
Help Wanted approaches motherhood as a series of job descriptions. Covering various aspects of education, identity, and management, each chapter begins with a job title and description, and then discusses in detail how such a job fits into the life of a mother. Author Darlene Brock uses a combination of her own experience and stories from the lives of others to drive home each of her points. She does not back away from difficult or touchy topics like gender roles and parental authority, and is decidedly confident and direct in her approach.

The stories shared are, in my opinion, the greatest strength of the book. Real-life examples are what girded up Darlene Brock when she discovered, to her dismay, that she was going to be a mother. So, real-life stories are what she uses to gird up other mothers. The stories she chose to share, whether from her own life and the lives of her family and acquaintances or from the lives of historical figures, are entertaining, inspiring, and at times downright hilarious. And they all successfully and powerfully drive home each of her points.

One final note, more for clarification than for commendation or complaint: this book is not distinctly "Christian" in content. There is very little Scripture quoted - in fact, I can specifically recall only one Scripture passage, although I might be forgetting others. There is little reference to God, the church, and Christian faith. I did not find anything in contradiction to a Christian world view, but if you're looking for Biblical advice, this is not the source. Even as someone who takes the Bible as my final authority for parenting, however, I don't think this detracts from the book. I simply think it's important for readers to know what to expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful! January 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic parenting book. At first I thought this might be a little to late for me to read because my daughter is already 17. But I am so glad I read it! As I was reading the book I realized that she gives good advice for when your daughters are little all the way up until they are married and beyond. She uses her own life experiences with parenting as well as stories about other mothers and what they went through. She lists 13 job requirements of a mother and she explains them all perfectly. This book is filled with great practical advise! I would recommend this to anyone with daughters of any age!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real & Heart Warming June 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
What a great read. Just simple and easy to follow along. You can tell her daughters mean the world to her. It seeps through every word written about them. You can see the smile in her writing. I am the mom of three boys, but many of the Rules she list are really universal and apply to moms and their kids of any gender. Good Read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book! April 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
As I am not a mother of daughters but instead a father, I took a different read on this book. I have to say that even though I am a father, I still appreciated what the author had to say in this book. I found the book to be an easy to understand that is filled with so many great examples and practical advice! I loved all of the anecdotes that the author shares and stories that make the resources being shared so much more real for the reader.

The author takes her own experience and makes it real for the reader and because the author writes in such a way that allows you to be a part of the action, you can see and feel what the author is going through which makes the book that much easier to read and understand!

Whether you have daughters that are young or are in their teenage years this book will give you some great advice in helping you to form a great relationship with your daughters that will last for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice March 30, 2012
By sjtlds
Format:Paperback
I am not yet a mother of daughters (I have two very young sons) but the information that was given in this book can (mostly) work for children of either sex.
The author provides us with a basic (ha!) job description for mothers and then gives an explanation as to what each section means: coach, relationship counselor, military strategist, etc.
The book itself was very easy to read and had some excellent ideas on how to help shape your daughter (or son) into an upstanding person.
This is a book that I will be reading over and over again in the future.
