5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, April 10, 2008
This review is from: Help Wanted (Audio CD)
THis is an amazing album. "Maybe" is such a beautiful duet; "Sun's Gone" makes me think of my city at dawn. Also, Belly of an Insect is an incredibly collage-like mix of amazing sounds. Flea, Shirley Manson, and Taylor Hawkins all sit in; part of the 'Help' I guess. Great work; so good to see this Jane's Addiction bass savant back in a big way.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Marks for a Super Album, September 10, 2008
By
This review is from: Help Wanted (Audio CD)
For those of you who aren't familiar with the name Eric Avery, he was one of the key players in all-time underground faves "Jane's Addiction". He had a way with precision and keeping the rhythm of "Jane's" amazing songs that most of us loved. If you've never heard a Jane's Addiction album then I feel sorry for you and recommend you to find one and listen to it.

This is Eric Avery's solo debut and shows a different side to Avery. It has a darker and moody vibe, different from the funky punk aggression of Jane's. It features "Walk Through Walls", is a song I really like. "Belly of An Insect" with it's post-punk stylings and effects is another song I like a lot. In my opinion this record gets the same high marks that made Jane's Addiction so great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Gorgeous, April 12, 2008

Just an incredibly rewarding effort from Eric Avery. I've been a fan of the truth and core behind Jane's Addiction ever since I saw him perform with his project Polar Bear in '98. This album take me down deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than current J.A.?, January 11, 2009

This review is from: Help Wanted (Audio CD)
The answer would be a definite yes. Not that there is anything wrong with Jane's Addiction, but I think back to the moments that stand out for me on Ritual de lo Habitual, and those moments are here in this CD.

For example, take the opening moodiness of Three Days (and killer bass riff ala Eric), and about 2:30 into the song (just before the up tempo part) you get this grandiose feeling when Perry starts to sing "Shadows of the morning light..." Those type of moments are here in this CD.

So now to review Eric's CD alone. I had always wondered what had happened to him after His Deconstruction project with Dave Navarro, since they too broke up. Then I finally did some research to see what, if any, of his current projects were. I see that he released a CD about a year ago so I picked it up after seeing the video for "All remote and no control". I was impressed and bought the CD the next day.

I would normally list which songs are the highlights, but then I would just be listing near the entire album (there are maybe two songs which are so-so).

If you miss the moodiness of JA, then this is a must buy.

simply one word...substance.
This was by far one of the best albums of 2008.
Although underrated and unknown through particular circles,Avery is not only a musician's musician, very few compete lyrically and musically.
Hands down, if you produce or write, you need this album.
Props...

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Diamond In The Rough, April 19, 2008
This review is from: Help Wanted (Audio CD)
This is truly a jewel of an album buried in the midst of all the monotony and insipid music being played and sold this year. This is not a Janes album by any means. It has its own unique beautiful original sonic identity. Once you hear it once, you want to play it again and again. Like finding a new amusement ride park, you are excited to go back and experience the thrill and joy over and over. Each listen you find it more intriguing and fascinating. If your musical taste walks a different path than the mainstream, I think you will really enjoy this album

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING ALBUM, April 13, 2008

Eric's voice is so incredible and all the music is so complex and rich. All the songs are great from start to finish - I can't recommmend it enough. Definitely worth buying the whole album. Song #5 Maybe is the best track, with Shirley from Garbage.

Eric Avery continues to show his musical relevance in this solo release. Haunting song, catchy hooks, special guest starts, this album has it all. Do yourself order a copy of Help Wanted and prepare yourself to enjoy a complete album of excellent music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful cd by an amazing artist, May 8, 2008
This review is from: Help Wanted (Audio CD)
Sure we all got excited to hear the original Jane's lineup would play the NME awards, but after listening to this cd, i'd rather they just let the sleeping dogs lay and eric continue on this path he's set for himself. This is an excellent cd. Listen to the samples and judge for yourself.

Read this with a grain of salt because I love all things Eric Avery (I would also *highly* recommend Deconstruction and both Polarbear albums, and of course, JA). I'd been looking forward to this release for awhile and safe to say I am completely blown away. Eric's solo debut is phenomenal. For me it recalls all the good things of his previous work but cast in a new light; you can definitely hear influences from Deconstruction (guitar sound in Unexploded & Philo Beddoe) and Polarbear (Beside The Fire, All Remote And No Control, & Chicken Bone), but they all have their own personality. I've always liked his use of strings, and on this album I love the marimba-like sound he's got going on several tracks. Like his previous works, and all great music, I think this album will stand the test of time well.

One of Eric's strengths is how beautifully layered and rich all of his music is, and the production on this album is fantastic. I think my favorite track is Maybe, a duet with Shirley Manson, where near the end the balance of bass, organ, and Shirley's incredible voice just gives me the shivers it's so good. Pop that track, crank it, and get carried away!

If you like any of the above mentioned bands even a shred, buy this album ASAP. You won't be disappointed.
