Book Description

August 30, 2005

Dave Pelzer continues his tireless crusade against despair with Help Yourself for Teens, an uplifting new book written specifically for young adults.

Sharing stories of his own adolescent struggles—fighting for his life against his alcoholic mother and enduring outrageous oppression at the hands of bullies and false friends—Pelzer imparts advice to help young people rise above their circumstances and achieve greatness. He offers teenagers practical solutions for overcoming their own hardships, focusing on three areas: facing current and past problems; realizing the importance of decisions; and finally, never giving up on oneself. Through it all, Pelzer never lets hisreaders forget that they alone have control over the outcomes of their lives.

Part self-help book and part inspirational memoir, Help Yourself for Teens is anempowering and uplifting guide to growing up in an often difficult world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overcome the hard stuff and rise!, December 27, 2006

This review is from: Help Yourself for Teens: Real-Life Advice for Real-Life Challenges (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best self help books I've read for any age (and I've read a lot). Author Dave Pelzer writes in a way that is so encouraging and real. He shares parts of his own story of abuse (which he writes about fully in his book titled "A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive"), how he overcame challenges to rise, and he gives great guidance--the common sense that's not always so common. This book is honest, from the heart with brains.

"Help Yourself for Teens" is set up in three parts: Dealing with Life (five chapters), Choices You Make Now and Where they Can Lead You in Your Future (three chapters), and Personal Resolve (two chapters). It's like a letter from a personal coach, one who's really on your side and let's you know that you matter. This book tells you "You can do it!" and gives you tools. It is a timeless gem. I recommend it whole heartedly to any one who wants encouragement and inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for teenage tough times, January 1, 2011

This review is from: Help Yourself for Teens: Real-Life Advice for Real-Life Challenges (Mass Market Paperback)
I purchased this book for my niece who is about to hit the trying teen years. It is important for teenagers to have positive role models and after reading about David Pelzer's life and his ability to overcome such a difficult childhood, his life is an inspiration and exemplifies that despite your circumstances, you can still carve your own road in life.
