5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Rereading, June 8, 2007
By
Those of us in the helping professions often deal with addicts of various types, to say nothing of those affected by another's addicition. Dr. Westreich illuminates the concept of addiction, while providing sensible, sensitive and highly useful advice on how those close to an addict can help. Refreshingly, the book is based in utter reality, and is highly pragmatic. I intend to reread it periodically to ensure the advice it offers remains fresh in my mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes getting an addict to treatment a doable thing, March 23, 2008
Addiction is an "equal opportunity" illness that afflicts people in all walks of life - and us - the friends and relatives who love them. Dr. Westreich's book offers innovative yet practical approaches to help these people we care about in a way that anyone can understand and implement. Dr Westreich has 15 years of experience treating addicts. With encouragement and compassion, he coaches you through a variety of ways to overcome what is often the toughest obstacle: getting the addict you love to admit the problem and seek treatment.

5.0 out of 5 stars helping the addict you love, January 9, 2011
This is a very well organized, clearly written presentation of an innovative approach (Creative Engagement) to dealing with addiction. Based on the author's extensive experience as an addiction psychiatrist, yet written for those who are not professionals in this field, this book is certain to be a valuable resource for family members and friends of those who are addicted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent aid for practitioners, January 20, 2011
This review is from: Helping the Addict You Love: The New Effective Program for Getting the Addict into Treatment (Paperback)
This book has a non-intrusive approach that I find very helpful for the family members of my patients who are in the early stages of learning about addiction. They are not yet ready to go to ALANON or seek family/couples therapy, and this lays the groundwork for their own engagement in the recovery process. I also recommend it highly for Pediatricians and Internists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mind Provoking Guidance, January 9, 2011
Like myself, most of those that seek this kind of help are trying to find out the "hidden messages" to assist us in unraveling the mystery of the addict we love, to guide them, and direct ourselves into a satisfactory guiltless manner to attend to our love ones. While scanning the stacks of selections at Barnes and Noble, within just the first few paragraphs assist me in purchasing "Helping the Addict you Love." We all have some form of an addictive person in our lives that we love. Dr.Westreich describes and educates us to what we think we see & know, but better yet, as to what we must learn to heal & assist in our own behavior to rescue those we care about.
