HELPING ADOLESCENTS WITH ADHD & LEARNING DISABILITIES
Ready-to-Use Tips, Techniques and Checklists for School Success by Judith Greenbaum, PH.D. and Geraldine Markel, PH.D.

This comprehensive practical resource gives all educators of teens with ADHD and/or learning disabilities a unique store of tested strategies, tips, and tools for helping students develop the understanding and skills they need to succeed emotionally, socially, and academically.

For quick access and easy use, materials are organized into 12 chapters and printed in a big 8-/14" x 11"format that folds flat for photocopying of any page as needed. Here's an overview of chapter topics along with one example of the kind of help each chapter offers:

  • Adolescents with ADHD and Learning Disabilities (Is It ADHD or Something Else?)
  • Understanding Legal Requirements (Differences Between IDEA and Section 504)
  • The Learning Environment (Strategies to Develop a Supportive Emotional Environment)
  • Reading and Writing in the Content Areas (Student Checklist for a Complex Reading and Writing Task)
  • Teaching Homework Completion Skills (Teacher Checklist: Ten Steps for Teaching Homework Completion)
  • Teaching Adolescents to Use Self-Management (Student Checklist: Managing Text Anxiety)
  • Developing IEPs and 504 Plans (How to Run a Difficult Meeting)
  • Behavioral Interventions (Teacher Checklist: Steps for Shaping Behavior)
  • Understanding the Role of Medication in Improving Attention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity (Observation Form: Problem Behaviors)
  • Gifted Students with ADHD and LD (Gifted Students: Myths and Facts)
  • Diversity and Parent Involvement (Teacher Checklist: Cultural Self-Awareness)
  • Preparing for the Future: Transitions to Postsecondary Settings (Parent Checklist: Helping Teenagers Prepare for College)
What's more, four appendices provide useful sources of further information, including organizations, references and websites, plus proven strategies for dealing with 20 common classroom problems encountered with ADHD and LD adolescents, from excessive movement and impulsivity to procrastination and defiant behavior.

"The authors clearly explain the diagnostic process and the teacher's role in continuing to evaluate student functioning. IN addition, they provide a practical and useful guide for teachers on understanding their students' range of behaviors and how they might or might not respond to them. The authors have a positive outlook and contagious belief that teachers can make a real difference in their students' lives." —Percy Bates, Ph.D., Former Director, U.S. Office of Special Education Programs, Professor Special Education, University of Michigan
