I am working with a child with this diagnosis and have found it to be an invaluable introduction to the topic with some good basic ideas to begin the therapy process. Supplement this book with one on social phobia or anxiety disorders in children and you will have good success working with these children.

I can't give this book 5 stars only because I personally didn't read it. I purchased this book and immediately gave it to my child's teacher. She read the book and passed it to the Guidance counselor. They both took teachings from this book and applied them to my child. With the fantastic support system from the school, my child has become increasingly verbal in the classroom setting-where he was completely silent last year. They both said this book helped them learn a lot about SM and how to apply techniques to my child.

This book offers many creative suggestions on how to help a child with this disability. It deals with the subject with compassion and enables parents and teachers to better relate to this specific group of children and help them effectively.
