Book Description

October 1994
This manual is intended as a resource for students and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, such as Acupuncture, Shiatsu and Qi Gong as well as for the general reader. The book details the energetic properties of around 300 common foods, and explains the principles of Chinese medicine and how to apply them for daily use. This manual encourages the reader to know their own body, in order to help themselves and get the best out of the information provided. "Helping Ourselves" is not designed as a quick-fix or dietary revolution, but is intended as a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, skilled professional guidance. This book can be read alone or as an accompaniment to "Recipes for Self-Healing" and "The Energetics of Food".

I highly recommend this easy to read book to anyone who needs to determine the types of foods they should be eating to find balance in their lives. It's a great book. I had the fortune to get this book as a gift from my longtime friend, Barbara Louise Reynolds, in Berkeley, CA. Thank you Barbara!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible book, March 23, 2010
This review is from: Helping Ourselves (Paperback)
I also got this book as a gift and ended up reading the whole thing in a single sitting. The information presented in the book is easy to explore and well expressed, but I also love the way that the author diplomatically talks about personal food choices. It is refreshing to read a book about diet that so fully embraces the individuality of the reader and does not attempt to indoctrinate him/her to a single eating philosophy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quick-reference, November 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Helping Ourselves (Paperback)
This is a great quick-reference book for when you just want to look up the characteristics of a particular food, or if you want to pick certain foods that you could cook for a specific TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) pattern.

It's relatively short (74 pages of info), and there are introduction chapter(s) on the basics of TCM patterns and organ imbalances and then finally various tables and lists of foods which is what I found most useful as reference.

I've used it to tweak diets by adding certain foods to a weekly menu, or recommended adding certain foods (or avoiding them) to patients.

It could have been much longer by giving more information about each type of food, but there are other books that can do this. I've found it most useful as a simple and quick reference book.
