1.0 out of 5 stars no, thanks
This book is very, very Christian. I was expecting something far less so. In fact, I want to get rid of it because it mentions God and Jesus and so forth at least every other page. This book is a stinker! (no-I am not an a godless heathen)!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone working with youth!, January 21, 2003
By
Greg Wiens (Elm Creek, Manitoba, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Helping the Struggling Adolescent : A Guide to Thirty-six Common Problems for Counselors, Pastors and Youth Workers (Hardcover)
I have been in youth ministry for nine years and this is the best comprehensive book I have for youth in crisis. It deals with every imaganable problem young people are facing and uses sound biblical, theological and sosiological information on how best to help as a youth pastor or youth leader.
As a matter of fact I don't even know where the text is right now because it is in such high demand from my youth sponsors.
Helping Stuggling Adolescents uses many tools to help the reader get into the mind of the struggling teen. One example is it uses case studies. It also has test that can be used in assessing problem situations.
In my view this is a must buy for any new youth pastor and an important tool in anyone's hand who works with youth in a Christian enviornment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy quick guide to assiting todays youth, September 13, 2000
This review is from: Helping the Struggling Adolescent : A Guide to Thirty-six Common Problems for Counselors, Pastors and Youth Workers (Hardcover)
This is an excellent resource for therapist! It's like cliff-notes for today's youths. Divided up in easy to use sections highlighting 36 common youth issues. Each section outlines what this particular struggle looks like, why it may be occuring, helpful hints on how to treat along with information for parents and case studies. The updated topics impressed me as cutting edge (Internet and Computer Game Addiction, Cohabitation, etc.) as well as the traditional issues (Eating Disorders, Grief, etc.)If all this wasn't enough... wait there's more! Included are 43 rapid assessment test for several different areas. When psychological text are over $80 to purchase $29 is a steal.

This review is from: Helping the Struggling Adolescent : A Guide to Thirty-six Common Problems for Counselors, Pastors and Youth Workers (Hardcover)
Helping the Struggling Adolescent is one of the best resource books on my shelf. While I am sure not everyone will agree with Dr. Parrott's conclusions or methods, this is one of the best books on helping teens through some of the most difficult issues in life. If you are looking for a book that you can pull off your shelf in a crisis to help you get some footing with what to do next, this is the book for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars so useful book ..., December 5, 2010
This review is from: Helping the Struggling Adolescent : A Guide to Thirty-six Common Problems for Counselors, Pastors and Youth Workers (Hardcover)
This book helps counselor and parents to understand children's inner side due to stress. Not only understand children but it has also helped me to understand myself about stress. I enjoyed reading this book.
A counselor is to understand and gain insight into the patient not to teach beliefs, principals, and make judgments.
To be able to distinguish the difference is the skill a counselor needs to possess. I learn through this book that test information, skill for adolescent.

This review is from: Helping the Struggling Adolescent : A Guide to Thirty-six Common Problems for Counselors, Pastors and Youth Workers (Hardcover)
I have worked with youth for over 10 years.I have found this book so helpful. It is a brief overview about 36 different situations teens struggle with. These situations range from suicide to phobias, schoolwork to guilt. Each section started with an overview about what the struggle is. It then tells what tends to cause these struggles and then as a counselor how we can help teens. It also suggests when we need to refer these teens to someone more qualitfied. I would recommend this book to anyone working with teens whether counseling or not. It is a great resource to have on your shelf and be able to grab when it is needed.

I started reading this book and found myself saying "Wow!" over and over again. New concepts, and traditional thoughts phrased in fresh ways. A very readable book, but with depth and insight.

This book offers insight to assist the Lay Person in understanding enough of issues facing young adults to allow them to know when more help should be sought. It is a wonderful source of information and will be used in conjunction with other materials to build confidence and understanding in our youth department.
