Adolescence is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood. As young teens leave the "child" behind and allow the "teenager" to emerge, they experience anxiety, awkwardness and a sense of loss for the first time. With the teenage years come new responsibilities and roles at home and in school. Teens earn a drivers license, take part-time jobs, spend more time with their peers, and prepare to leave the nest.
Not surprisingly, the grief journey for a teen is different from that of a child or an adult. The death of a significant person in a teen's life compounds and complicates the developmental process of adolescence. The teenager suddenly finds himself dealing with additional issues including:
. possible unresolved issues with the person who died
. the circumstances of the death
. dramatic changes in his or her life situation
. changes in relationships with others after the death
The teen's level of emotional and physical maturity, past experiences, and family dynamics all influence his grief response. Within the young griever is a complex mix of emotions, bodily reactions, thoughts, mental pictures, philosophical and religious ideas, and behaviors associated with the death.

This review is from: Helping Teens Cope with Death (Paperback)
If you know a grieving teen, please read this book. You'll be able to understand them a bit more... and maybe help them during a tough time. This book/subject would be valuable for a teacher in-service.
