Best Book on this Subject,
By A Customer
This review is from: Helping the Thumb-Sucking Child (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ever been able to find on this subject. What makes it unique is that the techniques described are based on MOTIVATION, not external appliances or yucky tasting applicants to the thumb or fingers. The author stresses how the child is made to feel a part of the process, and thereby gets a sense of self-accomplishment when the habit has been eliminated. This raises the child's self-esteem, which spills over into all aspect of the child's experiences.I recommend this book for parents and professionals who are working with children who are attempting to kick the thumb-sucking habit. It works!

Excellent Self-Help Guide,

This review is from: Helping the Thumb-Sucking Child (Paperback)
I have been searching for so long for a book on this topic...one that not only outlines the problems of thumb and finger sucking, and the damage it can cause, but also a book that tells you what can be done about it.This book gives comprehensive information to both parents and professionals alike on the causes, results and prevention of the digit sucking habit. The research done by the author attests to the success of the cited program. I am convinced that this book will be of great value to parents (grandparents, too) and professionals who are dedicated to eliminating the thumb-sucking habit of children.

Helpful - Easy Read,
This review is from: Helping the Thumb-Sucking Child (Paperback)
I got this book at just the right time to help us help our child quit thumbsucking. We are on our way! The book holds some great insights and has really helped me to feel supported in my approach to the whole issue. Also the graphic photos of nasty bite problems caused by thumbsucking really helped to motivate our child! Thumbs up (and. . . out of mouth!)

In one of my daughter's pre-natal scans, she was sucking her thumb. We therefore weren't surprised when she started sucking her thumb as a baby. I was dreading getting her to stop, as I know many parents and children struggle with this. She was a serious thumb sucker, one thumb staying wrinkled most of the time because of the sucking. This book was so helpful in advising at what age to stop sucking the thumb (around 5 years old), preparing her for it, getting her motivated, getting her and I working together on the issue, and explaining how to keep her thumb out of her mouth. My daughter has now gone 2 1/2 weeks with no thumb day or night, and I don't think she'll start back up. Both my daughter and I have had a lot of fun with stopping sucking her thumb, which was the last thing I was expecting! The author's full-time job is to help children to stop sucking their thumbs or fingers. Her experience shows in the book, and all the advice she gives makes complete sense.

Not Much Help,

This review is from: Helping the Thumb-Sucking Child (Paperback)
The only advice that may work for my child in this book is to seek professional advice. Positive reinforcement is part of the process but not all of it. These kids do this out of habit and there is no help for that in this book. Disappointed.

I received this book as a gift and have very impressed with Ms. VanNorman's advise on digit sucking is right on. What is often thought of as harmless can cause a great deal of dental and mouth problems that can be avoided. Expensive orthodontia is one consequence of prolonged thumb-sucking. I urge anyone interested in correcting the problem to read Rosemarie's book
