Book Description

March 5, 1997
There is hope for your dyslexic child—
here are practical ways to achieve real progress!

Not just a reading problem, dyslexia can affect many areas of your child's life—including understanding words, descerning left from right, and counting money. These problems can have a devastating effect of your child's self-esteem and can make you feel powerless to help.
But you can help your dyslexic child. Eileen Cronin, Ph.D., founder of The Raskob Learning Institute, has studied dyslexia for many years and has developed a working program that parents can use to help dyslexic children significantly improve their reading, writing, and spelling. Beginning with a simple test that you conduct at home Cronin presents you with a comprehensive and holistic program that any parent or teacher can easily use.
Inside you'll find these helpful chapters:

• Is Dyslexic Real?
• The Growing Mind
• Parenting the Dyslexic Child
• Help at School
• Helping the Dyslexic Child with Reading
• A Monster Called Homework
• And Many More Chapters Filled with Invaluable Information

With Eileen Cronin's guidance, you can begin right away to help your child overcome dyslexia and achieve greater self esteem.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Cronin, founder of The Raskob Learning Institute, has worked with dyslexic children for many years. Here, she offers a straightforward overview of dyslexia: what it is, how dyslexics differ from other children, how to diagnose dyslexia, and how parents can help their dyslexic children. After opening chapters that define the problem and provide advice on when parents should seek further help, Cronin concentrates on the school-aged child who needs help in adopting a learning style after a diagnosis of dyslexia is made. Exercises to practice with a child and case studies enhance the text. Final chapters deal with adolescent and adult dyslexics. Appendixes include a glossary, bibliography, list of support groups, and supplemental material for use with home exercises. Recommended for public and community college libraries.

From Booklist

Confusion over the term dyslexia--a dysfunction that affects a person's ability to learn to read, spell, and do math problems--is common, because dyslexia also affects nonacademic areas of a person's life and the level of dysfunction varies extensively between individuals. Cronin offers definitions, suggests how to have the situation evaluated for children and adults, and outlines specific teaching and coping mechanisms. An excellent resource for parents and educators, particularly because it tackles extracurricular as well as academic issues. 2.0 out of 5 stars I felt that this book did not provide enough resources., December 7, 1998

This review is from: Helping Your Dyslexic Child: A Guide to Improving Your Child's Reading, Writing, Spelling, Comprehension, and Self-Esteem (Paperback)
This book did not offer enough resouces for parents. It was also pessimistic in terms of the outcome for dyslexics. It was very helpful in terms of identifying characteristics that are not often associated with dyslexia, yet it still appeared to be very general in catergorizing these characteristics. One of the methods for teaching reading skills, however was very helpful but other methods should have been given as well.

Easy to read. The best part about this book is that it gives you actual exercises to do with your child to help them. For this reason alone I am going to purchase this book.
