5.0 out of 5 stars Should be recognized as a classic comeback by a hip-hop hero

3.0 out of 5 stars ventures into the darkside of life and the future
First of all, I bought this cd for like 3 bucks at an amc in cali. There is one really tight song on the cd called "secret plan". I would put it in my top 5 songs. Then you have a few better than average tracks like, 4 my doggz, well that's pretty much it. It's worth 3 dollars

"Helter Skelter" got trashed by most critics when it was first released, but I always knew that it was something special. You'll never hear anything like this. Ever. D.O.C. was considered by many to be a contender for the title of "Greatest MC of All Time" after his debut album "No One Can Do It Better." Everything changed when a tragic auto accident damaged his vocal chords. Most, probably even the D.O.C. himself, thought that his career was over. In 1996 he came back with "Helter Skelter," an album about friendships torn apart by greed and the end of the world, fueled by paranoia and world-weariness. The D.O.C.'s voice now sounds like a creature from a horror movie, but that only adds to the effectiveness of the ominous theme. It was a brave thing D.O.C. did when he returned to music. He could've given up long ago(who would blame him?) or embarrassed himself with a weak album. D.O.C.'s refusal to give up make this album a sadly ignored triumph of the spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 5 favorite albums, November 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Helter Skelter (Audio CD)
I can listen to this album over and over again. His voice after his accident sounds very scratchy and it makes for an excellent, unique listening experience. "Secret Plan" is my favorite song on the album which The D.O.C. wrote after reading "Behold the Pale Horse" by William Cooper, which is a song about the world behind the scenes and what is really going on. A lot of the album revolves around 2 things. 1.) How it was when he first started in the rap business and 2.) Illuminati type government and world conspiracies. I think this album is great and I would recommend it to anyone and wants to stray away from the "bling bling" mainstream rap that is out today or anyone who is looking to enlighten themselves. I have had this album for almost 5 years now and it still gets heavy rotation in my rap collection.

the d.o.c's voice may be a bit rough but ive heard other rappers sound virtually the same, and they're just putting on that voice.
If you know how important a role d.o.c played in the west coast scene people would give him loads more props, eg all Dre's raps on the first chronic are written by the DOC..anyway on to the album. DOC flows are just to tight, no one these days has his timing, imagination and raw flow. DOC says his own story on some of the tracks about how he didn't get half the due's he deserved and just his history with NWA, DRE etc, the rest is some post apocaliptic with some mad deep lyrix. Erotic D is a phatt producer to, with some far out and eerie west coast style sounds. If you persever with this album and listen hard to the DOC you will be rewarded.

Let's start it off by saying the other guy (TRUschwartzJG@hotmail.com from So. California) has no idea what he or she is talking about!! (He or she buys all of their own cd's at a swap meet so you go figure?!!#?)

The 6th member of N.W.A.

THE DOC is back with a new voice. A slammin cd with mad out lyrics and dope beats. It's great to see the D.O.C. back with vengence. A must to any cd collection.

He is still Funky Enough!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Erotic D & The D.O.C.!, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Helter Skelter (Audio CD)
After a fatal car accident in late 1989, Houston, TX native The D.O.C. has been braught to a Brand New World, which D.O.C. hooks up with another Houston native DJ, Erotic D and puts out Helter Skelter! This album is a hardcore west coast classic, that yet was denied by the media. The D.O.C. hooked up with Erotic D to remake the 1989 D.O.C.'s hit It's Funky Enough to Return Of Da Livin' Dead, and the best song on Helter Skelter is 4 My Doggz, the hardest hit by The D.O.C., and Doc hooks up with his homies from Death Row on the song .45 Automatic which features Daz, Erotic D, The Lady Of Rage & Warren G. Erotic D & D.O.C. have a track dissing on O.J. Simpson called Killa Instinc!

If you are a fan of West Coast Gangsta Rap, you'll love Helter Skelter which features artists from Erotic D, Voodoo Einstein, Eddie Griffith, Celly Cell, Daz Dillinger, Warren G, The Lady Of Rage, MC Breed, Jello Biafro, Slick Rick, Yukmouth & Lil' 1/2 Dead.

4 My Doggz Who Be Wit Me, ya'll know the best tracks are *2, 3, 4, *6, *7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, *14, 15, 16 & 17.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, this one is a keeper!!, October 17, 2003

This is one of the best albums. The people who are knocking this album and say they know why Deathrow didn't want anything to do with it are out of the loop. Obviously they do not know what the real story is. I believe this is an awesome album and brings back some great memories. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars the beats are top notch, January 2, 2002

Ofcourse docs voice isnt the best in the world, but the beats by erotic d make up for anything that goes wrong. The voice tends to grow on you and i now love this album and know all the lyrics off by heart. The doc has alot of interesting things to say. Songs like "ruthless 2 deathrow" and "4 my doggz" has various mentions about the good old gang. "Brand new formula" is a re-do of "the formula" on his 'no one can do it better' cd.
This cds not for everyone, but i love west coast beats like these and the doc can still flow .
