The veterinary technician who performs a hematologic examination is often the only one who sees and handles the patient's blood. To produce accurate test results- ones that will yield invaluable diagnostic information- the technician must not only be able to run the tests by must understand why they are being performed.

Hematology Techniques and Concepts for Veterinary Technicians introduces:

* The basics of blood composition, with detailed descriptions of red and white cell blood morphology and function;

* The sites of formation and distribution of the cellular elements within the body and how these can be altered under physiologic and pathologic conditions;

* Step-by-step procedures for numerous common laboratory tests and basic information on the significance of the results;

* The immune system, to help technicians understand the interrelationships of leukocytes, the major cells involved in an immune response;

* Specialized tests, such as the collection, handling, and examination of bone marrow and cytology samples. The easy-to-follow format includes color plates and illustrations as well as tables of reference values to be used by veterinary technology students as guides for their own test results.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Even if this book is aimed at technicians, it is extremely useful for vet students . . . A glossary completes this valuable source of practical knowledge." (Tomorrow's Vet , 2011)

"Instruments are illustrated with instruction on their use. Step-by-step illustrations show the test for antibody or antigen in serum. Good color photographs show the various cell types in various stages. As before, the book is directed to the newcomer and is a solid, useful reference." (Vin Book Reviews, 27 July 2011)

"I recommend this book to any technician or veterinary student. It is better than the first edition." (Doody's, 3 June 2011)

This review is from: Hematology Techniques and Concepts for Veterinary Technicians (Hardcover)
The title of the book should be "Very Basic Hematology Techniques for Vet Techs". All of the information is well presented although I would have liked to have seen a larger presentation of automated cell counting. A great starter book for a Vet Tech.

Small and concise. Great illustrations and easy to follow techniques. Was very deficient in my hematology knowledge and this book helped me pass my state exam. A great reference book for general labwork.
