3.0 out of 5 stars No replacement for the ASH-SAP
I bought this text as a supplement to ASH-SAP, while studying for the US board exam in hematology. Basically, to get some extra practice questions, with detailed explanations. I'd have to say that this book has some flaws, and I certainly wouldn't recommend using it instead of ASH-SAP, though it does offer a set of practice questions at a pretty low price. As long as you...

Wonderful addition to the hematology books with an innovative idea. A great mix of topics right from bench to bedside. I specially recommend you reading sections on transfusion medicine and myeloproliferative disorders. Also enjoyed statistics. Equally good for the practitioners and trainees. This book is very helpful for my FRCPath examination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to hematology library, December 31, 2010
This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
It is an excellent addition for any hematology trainee library , definitely you can not compare it to Multi-authored books like ASH-SAP nor to any big references but it helps you in mastering clinical hematology by reviewing topics in format you will never find it in any other books which is Extended Matching Questions. it worth every penny , hope the author will continue making newer editions with same great price .

5.0 out of 5 stars **Additional Resource, not a replacement for ASH SAP**, November 30, 2010

I read the comments of "moondog" with great interest and would like to share my experience. I bought this book along with ASH-SAP for my hematology board preparation on recommendation of a friend who found it very helpful for his FRCPath Hematology examination. It proved to be a very helpful resource as it provides a complete understanding of the clinical scenarios described (utilizing a completely different format of extended matching questions). To my information, EMQs cannot be found in any other published book of hematology. For fairness to the author, I'd like to remind that even topics like 'dental procedures in the immunocompromised' are vital equally for the hematologist & the dentist and such topics are not covered in usual hematology books. I would highly recommend it as a supplementary resource for the physicians planning to attempt any postgraduate examination in Hematology. Obviously if you are preparing for American Board in Hematology you should not use it as a sole resource; and we should not compare it with the multi-authored ASH SAP; rather may choose it as an additional easily affordable supplement.

5/5 stars (value for the price).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for FRCPath haematology, May 3, 2010
This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
Having done FRCPath haematology exams recently i know how scarce are books relavant for these new format EMQs in part1 and for short answer questions in part 2.I would highly recommend this book written by expert in the field for anyone who is preparing for this exam. This book is concise at the same time covers extensively all the important topics for the exam.I congratulate Dr Zaidi for having come with such an excellent, the very first of its kind which is extremely useful for fellows/resident training in haematology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first book of its kind! Was really needed in the market!, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
Will certainly order another copy for my friend. I was amazed to see this tremendous effort put by the author in formulating extended matching questions on hematology in a 343 pages book. We should remember that EMQs are far more difficult to formulate than simple MCQs. Author has included fabulous mix of laboratory hematology, clinical hematology and transfusion medicine vignettes. The information is very much updated and very useful. Recommended references are included along with the detailed supplementary information in the answers. I congratulate the author and will highly recommend this book to my students and all hematologists in training/practice. Wonderful read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book to understands of basics as well as advancement in Clinical Hematology., September 4, 2009
This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
I am a medical hematologist and oncologist. I bought this book for hematology board preparation. It's a great source of difficult questions. It's not a MCQ format but still helps a lot to refresh and learn hematology. It has nicely written basic facts about lots of disease process. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book, April 15, 2009
This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
I found this book very helpful. The questions and answers cover the topics in a clinically oriented way. I think this book is good for beginners and also an excellent review and update for seniors.. While reading the questions, you will come across most possible clinical scenarios that you may face in clinical practice. The explanations are very well structured and organized with updated and recent references.

3.0 out of 5 stars No replacement for the ASH-SAP, November 7, 2010

This review is from: Hematology: An updated review through Extended Matching Questions (Paperback)
As long as you don't mind some of the following quirks:

- The practice cases often seem more suited to diagnosis/treatment in an underdeveloped country, rather than the US (the author is from Saudi Arabia)
- Test sections are not really comprehensive and sometimes cover content which you wouldn't expect on the US board exam (ie "Dental procedures in the immunocompromised," "Selection of cytochemical stains in AML")
- Word choice is sometimes colloquial or clumsy ("All the available lab findings apart from WBC count of 12000/ul, Hb of 5.8 g/dl, LDH of 1550 u/l, low IgG level and a positive direct Coomb's test were almost normal." Hey, this patient's got some problems! But at least his BMP is 'almost' normal.)
- Compared to answers and explanations on ASH-SAP, the answers here are occasionally roundabout and stretch on for pages. There's a lot to be said for brevity and editing, especially as you're getting down to the final days before the test.

On the plus side, the author seems to have a strong clinical knowledge base as well as some background in hematopathology and lab testing. I'm just not sure what role this book might fit for most people preparing for the US board exam, especially if they're trainees and can get free access to ASH-SAP. I guess I'll have to let someone else comment on its suitability for standard exams in other lands ...
