The Arists Grows Up... a little,

This review is from: Hemingway: The American Homecoming (Hardcover)
The third book in Michael Reynold's five part biography of Hemingway, the American Homecoming, follows the first major shift in Hemingway's adult life, and his move from a private, unknown writer to public figure. This volume shows Hemingway publishing The Sun Also Rises, leaving his first wife Hadley for Pauline Pfeiffer, leaving permanent residence in Europe for a nomadic life, until finally settling down in Great Depression Key West.
This volume shows the reader how Hemingway the writer solidified the work he had done under his apprenticeship with Stein and Pound, and then steadily moved away from their direct influence. It also shows how Hemingway the man began to develop his bad habits with women, marriages, alcohol, and ungratefulness that will come to haunt him in subsequent years. Reynolds is an exacting scholar, and his prose is clear. He presents Hemingway's life and work as a story unfolding, and it is captivating. |
