Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-After a summer of attempting to cope with his father's suicide, Shaw, 16, and his mother move cross-country to Winnipeg to begin a new life. He gets off to a good start when he becomes friendly with Jai Dhillon, fellow volleyball teammate, and Tess, a girl in his English class. Shaw's mother exhibits uncommon wisdom in allowing him the latitude to work through his feelings at his own pace. At the beginning of the book, Shaw is angry and confused, particularly when he learns that his father, a famous author, was gay; finally, he is able to channel his negative aggression into positive actions. At the urging of Tess, he begins to use his writing talent to publish articles for the school newspaper. This book portrays true, if sometimes raw, emotions, and Shaw's character growth is impressive and believable. Students who are forced to confront loss and grieving will find comfort in the fact that they are not alone.

Review

"The clear theme of the pain of prejudice for the victims, be it on the basis of race or sexual orientation, will appeal to today's activist teens. It's interesting to note that these themes could not have been addressed so directly only a few short years ago. Highly Recommended." (CM Magazine 20030401)

"This novel is an exceptionally good choice for both male and female reluctant readers. Highly recommended." (Canadian Book Review Annual )

"Pick it up - you'll be glad that you did!" (Resource Links )

More About the Author

Like most people who enjoy writing, I also love to read. As a child, I couldn't wait to begin school so I could learn how. To me it seemed like magic. Books were treasure chests jammed full of glorious adventures and ideas, but I didn't have the key. I had to rely on my parents and older sister to read to me, and that just wasn't good enough. I wanted to do it myself. And I wasn't disappointed. Reading was everything I had hoped it would be. The only thing that frustrates me now is the knowledge that there are more books than I'll ever get to in my lifetime.

I've noticed when I read author biographies, that many writers are or have been teachers. I'm not quite sure why that is, but it is--and I'm no exception. For me, teaching was good because it helped me to understand children better. You see, I never really was one myself. Children are active, and I've always been more of a watcher than a doer. Maybe that's why I never learned to swim or skate very well. Perhaps it's also why I was farmed off to the outfield during neighbourhood baseball games. I shouldn't give the impression that I was a washout at everything. I could climb trees, though I was even better at falling out of them. And I rode a bike; I even have an assortment of scars to prove it. I may not have been overly athletic, but I did have a great imagination and super friends. We put on theatrical extravaganzas, produced magazines, ran detective agencies, held funerals for birds, operated roadside stands of many varieties, and conducted safaris in the woods behind our homes. I always think I grew up in a wonderful era, but perhaps it's all in the way I choose to remember it. But I do remember it--vividly--and that helps me in my writing. I can't imagine that I'll ever run out of ideas for stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Match this book to the right reader!, February 26, 2003
This review is from: The Hemingway Tradition (Orca Soundings) (Paperback)
Part of a series of "hi/lo" books for teen readers, THE HEMINGWAY TRADITION is short, intense and packed with incident. Sixteen-year-old Shaw moves to Winnipeg after the suicide of his writer father. Although Shaw's father killed himself as a result of depression and despair over his own homosexuality, Shaw reads this as his father's ultimate rejection. Shaw's own love of writing is tainted as a result. At the new school a friendship with a Pakistani student, a conflict defending his friend from violent bigots, a new romance and a chance to use his writing talents to draw attention to injustice, all drive Shaw's journey to emotional recovery and acceptance.

A decent read, decently written, but so slim and "easy" it's hard to recommend it even to younger teens: The subject matter, honestly handled, is really more to the taste of older readers (say grades 8-10). For those teens, however, who are reading at an elementary school level, and who find even a short story rather daunting, this is just the ticket, and would make an excellent (and entertaining) building block with which to develop their reading skills.

One of my teen reviewers (Gr 8) concurs: "I think this book is for someone who can't read that well-it was short and easy. The Hemingway Tradition was interesting though. The way Shaw found out how to live after his dad committed suicide was cool."
