4.0 out of 5 stars excellent value
I'm fond of Henckels' cutlery, but had just been keeping them in a drawer (with edge guards). An inexpensive block of this quality was a welcome addition to my kitchen.
Slots:
2 wide slots for knives like santokus or chef's knives.
5 medium slots for knifes like slicers, bread knives, etc.
2 small slots for paring/utility knives.

3.0 out of 5 stars first and last block i will buy
now that i finally got a super sharp edge on my old and heavy 10" chef's knife, i thought it would be nice to stick it somewhere other than on top of the drawer tray. i also have a long skinny 10" that never gets dull. i have recently bought an 8" forschner/victorinox chef's knife (5 stars). time for a storage solution.
got this block this afternoon. looks cool, BUT...

got this block this afternoon. looks cool, BUT ! my 2 chef's knifes did not fit the block's two large slots. blades bottomed out short of fully inserting, with about 2" to 3" of blade sticking out. i decided to open the tops of the slots to get the knives to nest properly. my trusty bosch jig saw with a hacksaw blade deepened and widened the top twoslots. then i found on the old heavy, the blade back was too thick to go all the way in the slot. more jigsawing. problems solved.
gave this block a third star cause the price was most bearable. maybe henckels knives are thin. also with amazon's price, free shipping and no sales tax, i don't mind not supporting the box stores to buy stuff like this.
suggest that henckels or amazon would state the clearance dimensions of these slots.

5 medium slots for knifes like slicers, bread knives, etc.

1 special slot for either a medium width knife or a steel.
the hole between the top of the block and the base is for kitchen shears/scissors.

I wouldn't mind another wide slot, but this is pretty close to exactly what I need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good...., March 3, 2003

I think this block is pretty good. It holds my knives perfectly which prevents the unfortunate slice of the finger when rumaging through my drawer. Two things one should be aware of before purchasing this block though.

1)...If you have a long steel, it may bottom out on this block. I have a Henckles 4-Star/5-Star steel and it fits perfectly.

2) If you have more than two large knives get the larger block. This is the only thing that disappointed me. I wished they could have had another slot for another "Chef's Knife" sized blade.

Other than that. I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value-priced and highly functional, February 14, 2003

Hey, it WORKS. Decently crafted of solid wood, and the slots are wide enough to accommodate my Henckels 4-star and Pro-S knives. This block holds everything I need it to.

Methinks Spider Woman wasn't rating the quality *of the knife block*, but whether she likes knife blocks in the first place. Of course the slots go through - that's so any dust or dirt falls out the bottom instead of accumulating in the slot. It works for me, and I think this is the best knife block you'll find for the price.

Addendum: My knife block, which was purchased at [local store], is slightly different from this one. The overall style, size, and construction are similar, but the slots have been re-arranged slightly, with three small slots across the bottom and a 3-3/8" wide cleaver slot across the top - total 8 knives, sharpening steel, scissors, and cleaver. If you don't need a cleaver and want more wide knife slots, this block will work well. If you require a cleaver slot, you may want to look for the model I have.

1.0 out of 5 stars JAHenckels 10 slot Hardwood Knife Storage Black, May 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block (Kitchen)
If you have a knife longer than 5 inches it will not fit into the holes. Because of that I can store only my shorter knifes i.e. pairing, sandwich etc. I would not have bought this had I known that!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Block Easily Falls Forward - Knives Empty Out Toward You, July 30, 2009

I had no problem loading my Henckels Twin Cuisine knives in the block - however - this block has a very high center of gravity. The handles on the Twin Cuisine knives are heavy and this block was constantly falling forward. Ever have a block of sharp German knives emptying out towards you? When I found I needed to warn every house guest I decided it was time to pitch this block for one that has more support in the front. If you have small knives this block probably works ok, but I would not recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts your best knives forward, July 30, 2002

This review is from: J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block (Kitchen)
This block is made of solid oak or other hardwood. It has a small footprint, projecting most of its bulk into terra incognita under the cabinets. I keep my carving and fillet knives in just one of its large slots. My supersized steel comes out the other end but is not a problem. It includes two slots for your favorite paring knives. I keep my Henckels scissor in a slot made for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for narrow knifes, September 23, 2008
This review is from: J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block (Kitchen)
First of all, Amazon claimed the list price is $40 which is not true. I found it at Bed Bath and Beyond and it's regular price is $19.99.

It's hard to tell if your knifes will go in all the slots because several slots are pretty narrow. I couldn't fit all my knifes in because of the narrow slots. If you are not sure if it would work for you, then you should not buy it online and waste the shipping costs both ways.

I am disappointed at Amazon's false price claim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cutlery/Good block, March 15, 2004
By
This review is from: J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block (Kitchen)
I do not like my knives to slam and penetrate the back wall of the drawer, if I should close it to quickly. This block is a welcome release from that hazzard. Also the famous J. A. Henckels crest, and unlike the block purchased by the reviewer of March 2003, is truly burned into the wood. Futhermore, I simply arrange the knives by choice, the size of the slots is irrelevant to me. I was very happy to find it for sale at Amazon.com, for the same price of a distant Ware House Mall, in my state.

3.0 out of 5 stars Made in China - and no good specs on slot sizes, September 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block (Kitchen)
I was disappointed to see when I unwrapped this that it was made in China. For those of you looking to purchase something that is NOT made there...keep shopping.

The width of the slots are not indicated, and as such, two of my knives will not fit in the holder. For future reference, these slots are:
2 - 2" slots
4 - 1-1/2" slots
2 - 1" slots
1 - 1-3/8" slot/steel holder

This info for ALL of the storage blocks on Amazon would be most helpful.
