J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 3-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Paring Knife

Amazon.com

Part of the popular Four Star line, this hand-honed blade is made with Henckels' Sintermetal Component Technology (SCT), which allows three different grades of steel to be combined to form a single piece, fusing together the blade, bolster, and tang. What does this mean in layman's terms? It means a strong, high-quality knife that will last a lifetime.

Founded in 1731, the J.A. Henckels company is not only one of the world's oldest cutlery manufacturers, it's also one of the most well respected, creating best-selling knives guaranteed to last a lifetime. --Kim Harwell

From the Manufacturer

First introduced in 1976, the Four Star® Series is one of the world's most popular knife lines. Four Star® knives were designed and developed in close cooperation with renowned professional chefs. The result was a fully forged knife with a unique molded handle. The Four Star® line contains knives for all tasks, and includes the following open stock knife types: parer, bread, peeling, sandwich, utility, carving, chef’s, granton edge slicer, santoku, and others. Four Star® knives are also available in a range of block sets and gift sets.

A Higher Standard in Knife Construction

Four Star® knives are precision forged from a single piece of exclusive-formula, high-carbon, no-stain steel under the all-new Sigmaforge standard. As a result, Four Star® knives have improved quality consistency, lasting sharpness, and perfect geometry. Sigmaforge one-piece construction also provides high precision and improved stability of the blade and steel structure, thus improving cutting-edge retention for lasting sharpness. In addition, Four Star® knives use J.A. Henckels’ Friodur ice hardening for corrosion resistance, a process that also contributes to cutting-edge retention.

It's All in The Grip:

The Four Star® series features high impact polypropylene handles that are permanently bonded to the knife blades without any gaps. These comfortable handles are break-proof, sanitary, and colorfast. In addition, the super bolster provides weight, insures safety, and adds balance.

Features:

  • SIGMAFORGE 1-piece, precision forged construction: Provides perfect geometry, high precision, and improved stability of the blade and steel structure, thus improving cutting edge retention for lasting sharpness.
  • Laser controlled edge: Is sharper and stays sharper longer. Has a more consistent blade angle.
  • Friodur ice hardening: Maximum no-stain properties and more blade strength. Improved resistance to corrosion and pitting.
  • Super bolster: Provides weight, insures safety, and adds balance.
  • Full rat-tail tang: Provides a proper balance and greater strength.
  • High-carbon no-stain steel, an exclusive J.A. Henckels formula: Non-staining, non-rusting.
  • Hand, precision honed blade: Is sharper and stays sharper longer.
  • Bonded polypropylene handles: Comfortable molded handles and food safe
  • Dishwasher safe: Easy care (Although hand-washing is recommended by J.A. Henckels).
  • Full warranty: J.A. Henckels stands behind all its knives.

Customer Reviews

Love this knife so much I got this one so I can have two on hand.

Holds a sharp edge for a long time and sharpens quickly with a few strokes on a steel.

This is my favorite kitchen knife. The handle is perfectly shaped. If you look closely, you'll see that the handle is designed/curved so your little finger is braced against the part that juts out at the end and your index finger braces against the saddle at the base of the blade. This gives you a solid grip to manipulate the blade. This is generally true of Henckels' 4-star handles as compared to the wooden handles. I've found that I much prefer the 3" blade length to the 4" length. The 3" does everything you would do with a 4" but with more control. The shorter blade seems to flex less. You'll find yourself stuffing this knife in your pocket because of its convenient size.
The Amazonprice is a bargain...

It seems that everyone's kitchen drawer holds more than one paring knife - ours certainly does, and this small knife by Henckels is a favorite.
The three inch blade makes it perfect for paring whether it be a garlic clove or potato.
With a user friendly handle it fits neatly into your hand, and is easy to grip for lengthy chores.
Pop it in the dishwasher, and it's like new.

As Julia Child reminds people all the time, a fine paring knife is a must. This one holds its tone or sharpness longer, and as others have noted its handle is perfect.
Makes an excellent gift for someone moving into their own place. While it is dishwasher safe I suggest that washing and drying after each use is better. I also would suggest you own two.

I have used Henckels knives for over ten years. They have excellent balance and feel great in my hand. With proper care, the edge stays keen for a long time. I currently have two 3" paring knives and can honestly say that they are the most used knives in a kitchen, and Henckels makes the best. You'll love it!

About 5 years ago I got into cooking stir fry a little bit and found that cutting carrots, onions and many other vegitables was quite a chore with the cheap selection of knives that my kitchen was stocked with. I had to get sometimes near paper thin slices of various ingredients and there was no way even the best knife sold by Target could stack up to the task. I went to a real cookware store and purchased this knife and the 14" chefs knife for starters.
The first slice through an onion I knew where the extra money goes, some of it is for the name, but the rest is all quality. These knives will amaze you with how well they feel with their perfect balance and with a little work, you can get the blade sharp enough to shave with. When I held the chefs knife balanced on a tomato and just pulled, the weight of the knife sliced through it with a clean stroke. The paring knife is handy for so many more things than just paring (which it does quite well), I've used it more than once as a steak knife. For some reason I cant stand serrated edges anymore.
Cut all the coke cans you want with your Ginsu, but leave the real jobs to a real knife.

I didn't think I'd ever again buy a German or French made kitchen knife: too heavy, too thick compared to Japanese knives. The reviews suggested that this knife was well made with a thinner blade and it was half the price of the next closest Japanese knife. Worth a try. Very nice knife. Light, sharp, good in the hand, and easy to clean. Initial very sharp edge has stayed sharp a long time where the French blade it replaced would have had to have been sharpened at least twice. Worth the money.

I love this knife! It's very sharp, it feels great in my hand and the size is very comfortable for cutting small things like mushrooms and for peeling the skin off of apples, etc. It also doubles as a chef's knife for my 3 year old daughter who loves to cook with mommy and daddy in the kitchen (closely supervised, mind you!) I also really like my 4 inch version: J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 4-Inch High-Carbon Stainless-Steel Paring Knife. I really like having both, but if I HAD to choose between the 2, I'd go with the 4 inch knife. The 4 is a little less comfortable for peeling and stuff like that, but it still does a good job with it and the extra inch is quite handy for slicing apples and what-not.

After over fifty years, my favorite paring knife wore out. The wood handle slowly came apart. Its very hard to replace a knife that you use every day. I went out to the mall to look. Bought one knife and did not like it. Bought another and it started to rust. I decided to go on line. Found your knife. Ordered it. I am so pleased. It is just what I wanted. I use it every day.
