5.0 out of 5 stars Great Set
I hesitated to buy these because the press was so good.
All the really good knief sets are expensive aren't they? In a word NO!
These are great.
Sharp, they seem to be holding the edge, diswasher safe so far, and
they look good to.
I may buy a second set, I use these for every thing from cutting pbj to
the toughest cuts of meat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so hot...
After only a few weeks and fewer than a half dozen washes, the knives appear to be developing rust spots and one has developed some crazy grayish dis-coloring. Thought I was getting a good deal but appear to be cheaply made!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied, October 12, 2005

This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 9-Piece Steak Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I got these as part of our wedding registry here on Amazon.

When I was selecting steak knives, I immediately went to Henckels for a trusted name. When I saw the price on these knives I was weary and when I saw the initial price, I thought that Amazon was just able to get a good price on these. I read that they came from Japan but hoped that Henckles would not put their stamp on a product they don't approve.

I am so satisfied with the product, extrememly shard, nice handles, and the block is very nice as well.

We're regular steak eaters and so far, new york steak, lamb chops, and ribs have been no contest for these knives.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of our best wedding gifts, August 30, 2004
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 9-Piece Steak Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I don't know anything about cutlery and my wife knew a little; so when we received this knife set as a wedding gift, we were kind of "Oh. How nice." We just figured we could make do with our old set, and that this gift was sort of gratuitous. We we ever wrong. Little did we realize how absolutely essential the Henckels International Eversharp Pro 9-Piece Steak Knife Block Set would be.

The knives are smooth-cutting and precise. The grips are extremely comfortable, and, so far, we've had no problem with the dishwashing. They are very durable and have not gone the slightest bit dull. This would make an ideal set for anyone's kitchen. (It makes a great wedding present too!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Knives for the Price/Keep out of Dishwasher, November 6, 2005
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 9-Piece Steak Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
These knives are great steak knives, but you MUST keep them out of the DISHWASHER to prevent spots and to keep them sharp. It is worth the extra time to hand wash all Henckels Knives. You'll never be sorry you did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value, January 31, 2006

I was looking at another Henckels set for a couple of hundred bucks. I just could not justify spending that kind of money for steak knives. I saw these and figured I could return them if they were too cheap. For $50 they are a super value. They don't have the weight of more expensive knives, but they are well built. I like the serrated edge. Cuts through a steak with very little effort. Block is a quality piece of wood. I'm very pleased and glad I did not spend $150 more for steak knives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good steak knives, NOT the best Henckles out there though., July 28, 2005
By
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 9-Piece Steak Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
To start with, I got this set mainly for the block. I replaced my knife set with a pretty nice Set of Henckles a few years ago, which came with a block but no slots for steak knives. I've been looking for a nice block just for the steak-knives ever since but had no luck finding one with the quality and look that I like. Most cheaper ones have slots so narrow that it won't fit any nice steak knife.

Getting a nice block-only alone would have cost me about $20 (Well, most won't go out and spend that money for a block only unless they are looking for a match, which is exactly my case). This set was on sale on Amazon for not too much more than the block alone which I would spend anyway, so I think I am getting an extra set of Henckles steak knife for about $10. Nice deal!

It arrived, with a very nice block that matched prefectly with my 'main' knife block: same material, color, handsome logo... That's what I looked for so I'm happy.

The knife itself are fine:
Its light, but heavier than it looks (which is a good thing for knife. Contrast to some's logic of thinking, a heavier knife is actually both easier and safer to use than a lighter one. Same rules go for sharpness. But this is not the place to dicuss that.)
It is from its "Eversharp" line which is of Henckles' lower end (not that they are bad knife, just how Henckles name their product-lines) and the knife has the look of an 'eversharp'.
To try to describe the LOOK of an "eversharp": Black ployester handle; "two-tone" finish on the blade (mirror finish on the most area, brush-stainless finish near the cutting edge); "micro-serrated" edge so you don't see big 'teeth' on the edge, but sure it was serrated. It actually looks very nice but it doesn't give you the ellegance look of more expensive ones (forge blade, wooden-balanced handle, smooth edge...)
Function: Cuts very well! Sharp!

Consulsion:
> Someone used Honda and Mercedes to compare this, I'll use similar analogy. Think Toyota: They make luxury Avalons, nice camary, ... sensible collora, smaller primus... All carry the brand Toyota. So you may have your preference toward the brand name Toyota (in this case Henckles). Its toyota always better/worse than other makers? It matter more on how YOU think. For me: I always trust the name Hanckles. This set is handsome but it does not give me all the feature and ellegant looks of a "nice Henckle" (so it is not Avalon or Camary, its probably a basic collora or a primus but its all depends on your need and taste. Some preferr a Celica over a land-cruser, it all depends on what fit you the best) but IT FUNCTIONS WELL. It has the Henckle's name behind it but you have to remember you are buying a lower end line. Nothing wrong with that, just "is it what you are looking for?"

As for me: It was a great buy since I am mainly looking for the block. Also, I got it while they were on sale at Amazon (lowest I have seen, and haven't seen it that low since). I thought I would just use the block with my old set of steak knives but end up using the new ones as a set. So I am happy for what I have paid for. Would I buy it for the regular Amazon price of around $50? Probably not.

I love these steak knives. I didn't buy this specific set, but I did buy the knives (2 sets of 4 each) ala carte. I had an existing block due to replacing an old knife set. I have been replacing my old knives with individual Henckels International Eversharp Pro knives. They are definitely sharp and the handles fit nicely in the hand. They cut through any type of meat with ease. They feel to be ergonomically styled and are very well balanced. One suggestion I can make for these knives (or any for that matter) is do not wash in dishwasher even though they claim to be "dishwasher safe". Over time, it will ruin the blades. That's why I am having to replace my old set. These knives are very reasonably priced too. I couldn't afford the real expensive knives, but I didn't need to as these are great. I generally purchase my knife stock at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (have also seen them at Linens and Things as well as Macy's), and because I am not purchasing a block set, I have been able to use my 20% off coupons. Hope this helped with your decision as to the brand of knives to purchase.
