The knife a chef chooses for slicing berries for strawberry shortcake differs greatly from the blade selected for dicing onion or cutting up a pineapple. Different tasks demand different knifes that cater to each ingredients hardiness and texture. To accommodate a variety of cutting jobs, Zwilling J.A. Henckels, the professional cutlery division of Henckels, offers this block set from its Professional S line. Henckels has produced highly functional knives since setting up base in 1731 in Solingen, Germany. The five-piece set continues this tradition, equipped with a 3-inch paring knife, 5-inch serrated utility knife, 7-inch hollow-ground Asian-style santoku knife, 9-inch sharpening steel, and knife block. A great wedding or graduation gift, this quality knife set provides basic essentials upon which to build a high-caliber knife collection for decades of use.
Craftsmen forged the blade, bolster, and full tang of each knife with a single sheet of high-carbon stainless steel for amplified hygiene, balance, and permanence. Using their patented Sinternal Component Technology, Henckels blended steel for the finest quality, resisting rust, corrosion, and stains. To enhance the blades initial efficacy, knives are subject to a Friodur ice-hardening process. Laser-controlled sharpness augments the knives longevity and efficiency. The indestructible triple-riveted handles are crafted in nonslip Novodur for ergonomic comfort. Sharpen knives regularly at a 20-degree angle on the magnetized and chrome-plated sharpening steel. The painted hardwood block provides protective storage for up to eight knives, the sharpening steel, and the shears. Though the knives are dishwasher-safe, Henckels highly recommends washing them by hand. Knives should be cleaned immediately following contact with acidic foods like mustard to avoid tarnish. Made in Germany; a lifetime warranty covers the set. The knife block measures 19-3/4 by 16-3/4 by 5-1/2 inches. The set weighs 8 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Got this set for $119, which was a decent value for what it is. At the current price of $179, I wouldn't recommend it. I find that I primarily use the Santoku knife anyway, and considering 2 of the 5 pieces aren't even knives---the block and the sharpener, $179 for 3 knives is bit expensive. Try the Pro S 7" Santoku, it's great, and it's pretty much where the value is in this set, so save your money and just buy the santoku.
