Editorial Reviews

Ben Watt, former co-leader of Everything But The Girl, respected DJ, and label head of Buzzin'Fly Records, returns to recording with his first solo album in over 25 years. Described by Watt as 'simply a folk-rock record in an electronic age,' Hendra continues Watt's groundbreaking work in a genre he helped pioneer with his partner Tracey Thorn in Eveything But the Girl through the 80s and 90s. Album features guest appearances from key artists including Bernard Butler, Ewan Pearson, and David Gilmour.

3.0 out of 5 stars You must adjust June 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you are a fan of Ben Watt's DJ production sound I'm not sure this will be up your alley. I've given this disc a few listens through and I have a completely different appreciation for it versus his DJ sound. It's nice to know that Ben does more than just produce music. To hear him play guitar and sing is actually quite refreshing. This CD showcases his song writing ability in more ways than one. The guest musicians also enhance the experience of listening to the disc. If you are looking for Ben's Buzz N'Fly and/or Lazy Dog sounds these are not it. The CD has a very low key feel to it. The songs are a bit mellow but not lacking substance. I envision sitting around a fire drinking a couple beers while listening to this album. It's not bad....but it's not stellar (imho). I feel its only three stars for my current musical interpretive state. This album would probably go very well with Fall and cooler temperatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and beautiful May 27, 2014
Format:Audio CD
On the surface, this album seems to shimmer, but it's real power lies in the tension between the surface and the undercurrent. The lyrics are some of the best I have heard (or read) in many years ... powerful insights into memory and loss, tempered with a tough but compassionate edge. There is no sentimentality here. And if Watt's direct address in poetic and unadorned, Bernard Butler adds the perfect counter - growling his way through the album with a lead guitarist's urge to unsettle and distort, emphasising the grit in the words. The cameo from David Gilmour is also wonderful. The overall result is subtle and rewarding. Great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, gently orchestrated April 30, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Beautifully written, gently orchestrated, I've been wrapped in these songs for days and am too comfortable to move. It is subdued and sublime, warm and pensive; I can say little about this album except that it feels right as rain.
