3.0 out of 5 stars useful parallel bible, June 25, 2006

There are four major parallel Bibles available that include both the Old and New Testaments:

#1, Essential Evangelical Parallel Bible (NKJV, ESV, NLT 2nd ed, and the Message),

#2, Today's Parallel Bible (NIV, KJV, NASB updated, and NLT 1st ed),

#3, Hendrickson Parallal Bible (this one, include NIV, KJV, NKJV, and NLT 2nd ed),

and

#4,Comparative Study Bible (NIV, KJV, NASB updated, and Amplified Bible).

If you want to have the four most popular English translations of the Bible in one book, you have them here in the Hendrickson Parallel Bible. As of June 2006, NIV, KJV, NKJV, and NLT (2nd edition) are the top four bestselling versions of the Bible in the United States.

However, the most popular ones are not necessarily the best ones.
I personally like the choice #1 above the best because it includes the most diverse types of translations, which is the point of using a parallal Bible. You don't want to compare four very similar translations. NKJV is very literal (at places more literal than NASB, which is generally considered the most literal major translation) and is based on the traditional text of the New Testament. ESV is also very literal, reliable translation. It is an evangelical update of RSV. NLT is an excellent translation that reads very smoothly. The Message is a paraphrase. It is brilliant at places, but not so reliable at others. Nevertheless, it will provide insights other more formal translations cannot.

Some people might not choose #1 because it does not include NIV, which is many people's main Bible version. NIV is generally good translation, with certain problems. In my opinion, several more recent translations, such as Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), New English Translation (NET Bible, available at www.bible.org), and NLT 2nd edition, have surpassed NIV. There is no reason to stick to it unless you absolutely have to.

Choice #2 above features NASB updated edition besides others. It is a very literal translation, though the updated edition is not as literal as its predessor. KJV is a classic. NLT 1st edition is a freer thanslation than its 2nd edition.

Choice #3 has two rather literal translations and two more dynamic translations.

Choice #4 is the least desirable one. The Amplified Bible is not very reliable. Its translation is misleading at many places.

In conclusion, choice #1 is my top choice. Choices #2 and 3 are a tie. You may pick one depending on your preference and need. I would not recommend choice #4.

Nelson will publish a Parallel Study Bible later 2006, featuring NJKV, New Century Version (NCV) and the Message, with study notes adapted from NKJV Study Bible. None of the four parallal Bibles mentioned above contain any study notes.

Unfortunately, HCSB is not yet featured in any parallale Bible containing both the Old and the New Testament. It is an excellent translation, providing more accurate translations of some verses not found any other major translations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Hendrickson Parallel..., May 16, 2009
The New Hendrickson Parallel Bible: King James Version, New King James Version, New International Version, New Living Translation, 2nd Ed

I find this book to be an excellent reference source printed on what appears to be a quality 3.5 coated stock paper. Page turning is easy and quite. Paper is soft and silky to the touch. The print quality is superb with no smear or blemishes and of adaquite print pica size. Binding is of the utmost quality making this a piece of fine book art. I am glad I purchased a copy of this book. The price was affordable and constructed well above its price. This book will be a family airloom and collectable because of its detail in constuction. This book most likely will last for serveral generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Side-by-Side Biblical Resource, May 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a an awesome Biblical reference that lists the four most popular side-by-side translations - KJV, NKJV, NIV, and NLT. The print is not too small, as it is in some Bibles. It is easy to read and informative. The only thing I wish it had was a concordance in the back of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Note : NLT - 1st ed.(1996) not 2nd ed.(2004), July 21, 2006
I'm confused for NLT version. I called to handrickson directly, and they confirmed that it used 1996 1st edition of NLT. At this moment (7.21. 2006), there is no parallel bible with both NIV and 2nd NLT. You may buy Evangelical (Oxford - No NIV), or Handrickson (1st NLT with NIV), at your preferrence. I wish I could have KJV-NIV-ESV-2nd NLT parallel.

Excellent Bible! Especially for people that are trying to learn and understand. It doesn't come with an index or dictionary which kind of sucks but its over 2700 pages on its own therefore, I understand! But like I said, an excellent Bible.

It's not small, but it fit in a cordura carry case just fine. Excellent and fairly unique combination of translations. Different groups and services that I associate with use different translations, so I got this and can follow along nicely.

Very readable font, enough room between translations to keep things separated. Room for references or writing if you want.

For studying, it's useful to see differences between the translations! Many important words like hope, pride, and repent (to name a few) have multiple meanings and having multiple translations helps you make sure you're understanding what you're reading a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best parallel bible I have ever read!, January 6, 2008
By
I love the versions available in this parallel. KJV, NKJV, NIV, NLT these four versions when presented side by side give you such a clear understanding of the scripture you are reading. I love that I can compare four versions of some difficult or confusing verses I have read. The beauty of the NKJV and the readability of the NLT make this one of the best Bibles I have ever seen. I would recommend it to everyone!
