When Lulu Ziminski, "a fashion maven extraordinaire who was world-famous for her flair," meets Henley, a Japanese Chin, at the Sweetie Pie Pet Shop, it's a perfect match. So begins HENLEY: A NEW YORK TAIL (Glitterati, $20), written and illustrated by Julie Muszynski. The book traces Henley's rise from adored pet to tast of the town: being discovered at Bergdorf Goodman, fleeing the "pupperazzi" and hobnobbing with the Plaza's Eloise. Inspired by the late real-life Henley, Muszynski's own Japanese Chin, the charming tale of friendship and loyalty enchants with its witty text, hand-drawn pictures, vintage and contemporary photos and lift-the-flap pages. Kathleen L. Kent
MODERN DOG MAGAZINE, October 2005
HENLEY is a delightful parable. Saucy, sophisticated, full of wit and fancy, it is the story of a Japanese Chin whose photogenic good looks soon become his claim to fame. As the Brad Pitt of dogs, he quickly rises to A-list status. Sought after and celebrated, Henley travels the world leaving behind his one true friend, Miss Lulu. Surrounded by adoration, Henley's travels become a lonely odyssey. Stardom and adventure eventually loose their appeal as Henley comes to realize what his heart truly desires.
HENLEY is a visual smorgasbord complete with a map, marvelous sketches, pop-ups, fold outs, and photographs of English and Japanese royalty with their Japanese Chins. Packed with alliteration, rhyme, play on words--"a madly marvelous and magnificent creature...everyone wanted his photograph"--this book is great fun. Linda Wilson
BRILLIANT MAGAZINE, November 2005
The pampered pup Henley, a Japanese Chin, is every bit as charming as he is adorable. Inhabiting an elite Manhattan circle that brings to mind the children's classic, "Eloise," Henley and his devoted owner Miss Lulu take on Bark Avenue, the Elizabeth Arfden Salon and the Fur Seasons. The appealing illustrations and unabashed cuteness make the book universally delightful.
GOTHAM MAGAZINE, July 2005
This grandly illustrated book offers a look into the spoiled life of Henley, the little dog that could. The story follows Henley's rise to fame--from his adoption by style icon Ms. Lulu Ziminski, to his discovery at Bergdorf Goodman by famous photographer Eduardo d'Eduardo d'Eduardo, to his relization that fame would never be enough to fill his heart the way Lulu did. Stuffed with New York landmarks and a special guest appearance by Plaz Hotel fixture Eloise and her dog, Weenie, the book will delight children and warm the hearts of even the iciest fashion mavens. (Glitterati Incorporated, $20) Ned Simmons and Will Morgan
Once catapulted into the pupperazzi's limelight, Henley can only think up, up, up and quickly begins his foray into the luxurious life of a celebrity. But what begins as a tour of all that glitters and glows quickly turns into a lesson that celebrates the heart, loyalty and friendship in its truest form.

this was an adorable book on the history of the japanese chin that is perfect for young girls interested in dogs, life in nyc, and/or fashion. as a women with a soft spot for that time in my life when books and movies were my only source of information on life outside my hometown, i loved it. the illustrations and the imagery are wonderful snapshots of an imaginary mind of a dog. i loved the special little features, reminiscent of the griffin and sabine books. it's a no lose proposition!

Henley,
This review is from: Henley: A New York tail (Hardcover)
Henley is a jewel of a book! It is an exquisitely crafted, and beautifully illustrated children's "love" story between a lovely little pup Henley, and his wordly owner whose character is a sophisticate, visually reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. This is a wonderfuly imaginative story depicting Henley's fast paced journey and rise to stardom through fashion, flair, and flirtation, yet ultimately he reveals that it is the love, loyalty, and devotion of his owner, that he is most appreciative of. Though it is largely ficticious, it contains sprinkles of interesting historical facts regarding the history of the Japanese Chin throughout. Also noteable are the elegant illustrations and cleverly crafted "play on words" are such as "The New Bark Times" and the "paw-perazzi" which are all dog related that will leave not only the children, but even the oldest of audiences amused. Adults as well as children will develop their own unique affection towards "Henley". The book's design is very reminiscent in style of the 1950's "Flair" publications, which were so visually vibrant and interactive, with a standard of quality and style of publishing that is rarely seen in children's books today. BRAVO!
