Book Description

Women of Our Time Series
A biography of the leader who fought to improve the lives of Jewish people.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

The life and accomplishments of this great Jewish woman are simplified in a dignified manner in this very readable biography. Szold founded Hadassah, today the largest women's Zionist organization in America. In 1920, at the age of 60, she emigrated to Palestine to work for improved health care. In the 1930s, she became the driving force behind the Youth Aliyah movement, which helped resettle Jewish children who had escaped from Nazi-occupied countries. Kustanowitz captures Szold's indomitable spirit, and adeptly integrates necessary background on Judaism and the Holocaust into the smooth-flowing text. The chapter on Szold's childhood emphasizes her love of books and learning and the importance of education without being didactic. This will be a useful addition to collections needing shorter, quality biographies comparable to Our Golda (Viking, 1984) by David Adler. It is for a younger audience than Daughter of My People (Lodestar, 1987) by Hazel Krantz. --Micki S. Nevett, Temple Beth Emeth Library, Albany, NY
