Book Description

January 2003 Bloom's BioCritiques
Henry David Thoreau's accomplishments as a writer and a naturalist, along with his far-reaching political influence, are rarely disputed. His lasting influence can be established on the basis of "Civil Disobedience" alone. Learn more about Thoreau with this text, which includes an extensive biography of the author, literary criticism, a list of works by and about the author, and more.

This series is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School; preeminent literary critic of our time. The lives of the greatest writers of the world are explored in the new series Bloom’s BioCritiques. In addition to a lengthy biography, each book includes an extensive critical analysis of the writer’s work, as well as critical views by important literary critics throughout history. These volumes are the perfect introduction to critical study of the important authors currently read and discussed in high schools, colleges, and graduate schools.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-Bloom's introductory essay is followed by a lengthy biographical portrait by Ellyn Sanna and a critical essay by Michael Cisco that discusses the important symbols and themes of Thoreau's work, including his political influence. There is a bit of repetition, but it does put the author's work into perspective with the cultural and historical events of the day. Two additional essays, one by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Walter Harding on "Thoreau's Ideas," are included. Both give personal and unique insights into Thoreau's work. While sometimes tedious to get through, this volume gives the information students need to help them understand the man and his writing whether they read the book before or after digesting such works as Walden, or Life in the Woods.
