Songs are Back!,
By Jeff Pucillo (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Henry Elsesser (Audio CD)
For anyone who grew up liking bands with good songs or good musicians and loving bands with both, "Henry" will make you feel young again. Solid songcraft combined with a rock/folk/country/jazzy sound makes an album that is as diverse as you'll find for a debut record. "Hard to Find" is a radio single if there ever was one, and "Angeline" is unfortunately too GOOD to ever be heard on American radio. I hope that future endeavors will experiment a bit more with vocal harmonies although Elsesser's voice is a joy to behold when solo. Be warned that the compositions are intricate, it will take a few listens before you really feel at home here but the payoff is enormous. If you really want immediate gratification (and a short shelf-life) go for Britney Spears. You'll enjoy "Henry" a year from now just as much as you'll enjoy it today.

Elsesser is a great singer/songwriter who needs to be heard,

Henry is great. I have seen him live a few times now. His songs may take some patience for a person used to louder faster music to get used to, but when you do, just sit back and enjoy. Catchy congs and interesting lyrics make this a c.d. worth your money.

I know you've probably never heard of Henry Elsesser, but I have. This is quite possibly one of the best CDs that I have ever bought. I first heard Henry at Fire and Water, a restaurant in Northampton, Massachusetts. I signed a mailing list that gave me a free CD with three songs on it and I was hooked. He sounds like a cross between Elliot Smith and Sean Lennon. But it wouldn't be fair to make comparisons. Henry has a style all his own. Come on. This CD is a fair price and you can't lose.

Henry has a tremendous range, taking us from comfortable and soulful, all the way up to hard rockin'.This is really an amazing compilation of work by a clearly talented artist. His lyrics are thought provoking and evocative. Great as background music, great for driving, great to just sit and listen.

Sam Witt thinks this album is amazing,

I won't waste too many words expressing the obvious. Elsesser is an incredibly talented, unpretentious and wickedly good singer songwriter, and the musicians backing him are smooth as well as damn good. In a world of mediocre, overly marketed music, this CD rings out loud and clear.I was astonished by the lyrical integrity of this album, as well as its originality and fluidity. It's just that good.

I don't know who all of the "Valentine's" are, but I'm now in love with them and the song. Made for the radio! Play it, please! The smokey, sultry "The Final Scene" is one of the best written songs I've ever heard, and "So Close to God" just kicks! Way to go, Henry!
