Book Description

November 1998
The new film from the chronicler of modern-day love in America.

Henry Fool is set in an apparently settled suburban community whose underlying tensions come bursting to the surface with the arrival of a stranger in town -- Henry Fool. An unshaven embodiment of the Life Force, Henry insinuates himself into the family of a garbage man named Simon and changes their lives irrevocably. Poetic, bawdy, contemplative, often side-wrenchingly funny, and finally quite touching Henry Fool displays Hal Hartley's fine talent at its peak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dominates AMERICAN BEUATY and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, August 26, 2000
This review is from: Henry Fool (Paperback)
This is going to be one of the most underrated, underwatched films of the decade. Why does a award winning script (Cannes) go unnoticed shortly after its nomination and acceptence? Based on Harold Bloom's ANXIETY OF INFLUENCE, this dark comedy inspires and uplifts while the tongue stays in the cheek. Literary influcences include Goethe's FAUST and James Joyce's relationship with Samuel Beckett (the latter was the secretary for the former for a short while). I cannot say enough for this film. By and far the most power film, if not a contender for most power piece of literature this decade and of (gulp) this century. Get ready for gut wrentching catharsis set on 11! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT AN UNEXPECTED GEM, March 5, 2005
This review is from: Henry Fool (Paperback)
How come I have never heard of this film? I found it by accident and it is amazing. It's smart, unexpected, ironic, sweet and dark. This film is an example of storytelling at it's best and puts big budget blockbusters with no real heart to shame. It is about friendship, the written word, family and small town life all mixed up in one little dysfunctional package. Watch it and be ready for anything. I loved this movie.
