Henry Handel Richardson is one of Australia's most important writers. She grew up in Victoria in the late nineteenth century, and left Australia at the age of eighteen to pursue a musical career. This volume includes The Getting of Wisdom (1910), based on Richardson's own experiences at the Presbyterian Ladies College, Melbourne, in the late 1880's, together with four of her short stories about adolescence, an extract from her memoir Myself When Young, and some of her commentary and correspondence about the novel.

About the Author

Australian-born writer Henry Handel Richardson (1870-1946) became famous for her subversion of stereotypical 19th-century ideas about feminine education and female selfhood. This collection of her work includes four of her short stories about adolescence, an extract from her memoir, and some of her commentary and correspondence about The Getting of Wisdom, an Australian literary classic. Catherine Pratt is a lecturer in the School of English at University College UNSW, Australian Defence Force Academy. She is the author of various articles on Henry Handel Richardson and on other aspects of Australian Literature. Susan Lever is a Senior Lecturer in English at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.
