5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beach Reading for the Younger Set, May 11, 2007
This review is from: Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea (Paperback)
My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

This particular books captures the essence of going on a trip to the beach: the anticipation, the long drive, the waves, the crabs. This book would also make a good read-aloud for a younger child about to go on a trip to the beach.

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Henry & Mudge book., August 16, 2005

This review is from: Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea (Paperback)
The winsome, colorful illustrations in the Henry and Mudge books are delightful. I used to read the series when I was in elementary school. This one, for whatever reason, has remained my favorite and is actually the only one I owned personally. Any fellow dog-loving children should enjoy learning to read and explore with Henry and Mudge, as well as other book series like 'Nate the Great,' a detective. Recommended.

I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it! She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story and pictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to the beach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in the water. The length of the story is just right also for her. It's a wonderful book and we are buying two more from the series besides this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The parents love this one especially, March 17, 2008

We have many of the Henry & Mudge stories. We love the humor, thoughtfulness, and the way the love and bond between a child and his dog is captured in these stories. This one is a favorite of mom and dad. We would probably read it without reading it to the children - because of the memories this story brings back of visits to the beach. The children, of course, also love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a cute story!, January 18, 2012

This review is from: Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea (Paperback)
As a home-schooler, I am using Henry and Mudge books to teach my daughter to read. She went through the "Now I'm Reading" series to learn the sounds of phonemes, but this book is the first "real" book she has read. She loves the very realistic child and dog experience of going to the ocean, and she laughs at the silly things each character does... Henry looks at everything and tries everything while Mudge sniffs everything, Henry savors his hotdog while Mudge gulps his down and Henry's father puts tons of gross toppings on his hotdog (well, kids think they're gross toppings). So the content of the story is enjoyable for kids, but what I like about this book is that it truly is an early reader. So often leveled readers contain massive character names or sight words that are way beyond a child, but this book is, for the most part, very readable for kids who know their phonemes--most words are single-syllables and the sight words are pretty basic. A great story!

5.0 out of 5 stars A favorite in a sweet, well written series, December 19, 2010

This review is from: Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea (Paperback)
Our preschooler has enjoyed Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea many, many times since we purchased it from Amazon a year ago. As other reviewers have noted, this short but engaging "first chapter book" captures many of the highlights of a young child's trip to the beach: the anticipation during the car ride, ocean waves, sand castles, sno cones, and a surprise sea creature. Mudge, in his understated way, is ever the loyal companion and gets a small moment of glory all his own.

As a series, these books are fantastic. They capture the simple pleasures of everyday life through a child's eyes, yet they are not childish, overly silly, or condescending to young readers. The illustrations are whimsical and sweet. And the length is just right for the youngest readers.

Henry And Mudge And The Forever Sea

We have about 9 of these books. Each is a unique story, there is no formula here. They are creative stories that deal with real life situations in a special Henry and Mudge fashion. They are warm and loving and fun. Henry loves his big dog Mudge. I am going to buy more of them.
