Henry and Mudge in the Sparkle Days,
By A Customer
This review is from: Henry and Mudge in the Sparkle Days: The Fifth Book of Their Adventures (Library Binding)
Henry and Mudge in the Sparkle Days Henry and Mudge enjoy the winter season in this delightful collection of three short stories. The words are easy and the type is large enough for the beginning reader to feel comfortable. This book is filled with humorous illustrations that extend the text. In one illustration Henry is sliding a reluctant Mudge across an icy pond. In another picture Mudge messes up Henry's snow angel. This is a good book for the younger set.

The first chapter of this book is about Henry and Mudge waiting for snow. It's a good story and one that kids can relate to. Then the next chapter is about Christmas Eve dinner... which sort of overlaps with the Henry and Mudge Christmas story. Then the third chapter is about the family taking winter walks and looking at the stars and then coming home to relax by the fire. In my opinion, the first and third chapter have that pleasant childhood magic which the other Henry and Mudge books have, but that second chapter is awkward and out of place. It's a cute chapter, too, though because Mudge can't join their dinner, but they all feel sad without him so they let him in the dining room and he gets to eat turkey. Cute story.

I am a teacher and this is an excellent book for young children. This book has a high interest level for children who are beginning to read.

I am a grandmother of seven and a retired elementary librarian. I cannot exaggerate the value of the entire Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant! I have entertained children in my lap for countless hours as I read and reread various titles and I have enticed reluctant readers to begin their reading career. I would suggest Henry and Mudge: the first book as your original purchase. After that, the sequence does not really matter much.
