5.0 out of 5 stars Great Humor
If you like Henry Rollins, you will like this video. It is just him doing his usual humor mixed with a healthy dose of philosophy and opinion. If you are easily offended by foul language, religious discussions... well actually, if you are easily offended by anything, then this is definitely not the DVD for you. I've shelled out money for this DVD, Up For It, and the reissue of Speaking from the Box and paid about the same for all three (four considering one is a double DVD set), but of the three, this one seems the lightest in terms of content because, well, it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Humor, February 17, 2004

This review is from: Henry Rollins: Live at Luna Park (DVD)
If you like Henry Rollins, you will like this video. It is just him doing his usual humor mixed with a healthy dose of philosophy and opinion. If you are easily offended by foul language, religious discussions... well actually, if you are easily offended by anything, then this is definitely not the DVD for you. Rollins has an excellent ability to put into words human quirks and those frustrating things that happen in daily life, as he does here with his commentary on driving, where all I could think was "Yep- that is it exactly!". He also discusses growing up with Fugazi musician Ian, and the antics when they worked together such as "Human Sundaes" (there is one bit about flinging dead fish that is very funny). Other bits include stories about his travels including short sturdy women with mustaches on the Moscow subway, riding through traffic in Cairo, and visting the Wailing Wall in Israel. When he takes a serious turn, uses some time to talk about his philosophy on drugs and drinking and why destroying your body makes no sense. One of my favorite parts of this DVD was actually the Bonus Scene where he talkes about his deep need to out-rock Iggy Pop at a series of concerts. Another really amusing section is when he reads aloud a broken-English letter from a fan from the Czech republic. He shows the humor in it without demeaning or insulting the writer. I have seen his stand-up be funnier at times, but I can completely recommend this DVD. It is just laugh out loud funny, and both the humor and the philosophy are honest and thought-provoking.

I've shelled out money for this DVD, Up For It, and the reissue of Speaking from the Box and paid about the same for all three (four considering one is a double DVD set), but of the three, this one seems the lightest in terms of content because, well, it is.

67 minutes, a lot of it taken up by the repeated subintros with their topic headings, which, given the discussion of what Rollins tried to do at Luna Park one night a week a month, and given how long he's been known to go on for, it makes one feel only one thing about this DVD and that is CHEATED.

Now there are some funny bits, such as his further adventures with Dischord head honcho/nice guy Ian MacKaye during his youth in DC (extension of the Pet Store story from ...From the Box), his three round battle with Iggy Pop, but there's also a lot of the standard Rollins schtick we've heard before (travelling exhaustion, rage directed at everyone around him, etc.) so what was left on the cutting room floor troubles me and it should trouble you if you're a fan of Rollins, and if you aren't, there's something wrong with you.

Rollins could sneeze into a jewel box, and I would be on it with twenty dollars extended, but man, I wish there was more here because I know it's there and it's worth more than the devoted hour and a few odd minutes.

Signed,
epsteinsmutha

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Collection, February 15, 2008

My only complaint is that the dvd is short. Outside of that, Rollins is at his best. Stories involving hijinx with Ian MacKaye, "conflicts" with Iggy Pop, and driving in Cairo are too good to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think I just may be in love with Henry Rollins, July 13, 2007

If you didn't just love Henry Rollins before, you will certainly love him after seeing this. No one has his energy, wit, or common sense when it comes to the spoken word. He's humorous and thought-provoking, not to mention hot. Purchase this item. You will not be disappointed. And you just may become infatuated, too. (Uhmmm, that last comment was reserved for the ladies.)

5.0 out of 5 stars best of the bunch, May 20, 2007

I've got all of ROllins' performances on tape, and this is by far the best in the group. If you've never heard his act before or if you're trying to decide which performance to buy, this is a good one to start with.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Time seeing Henry Rollins on DVD or speak, September 26, 2005

First I've read some of Rollin's Books but never seen him speak. Mind you it's not so much stand up comedy genre but more like a social discourse that turns out funny. Letters from Boris had me dying or Henry Rollins vs Iggy Pop on the extra bonus DVD feature is a MUST see. There were others that were funny as well here's a hint Henry Rollins and his best friend working at Hagen Daz. Yes imagine the possiblities. Some of the scenes weren't as funny but they still can bring a grin. If you haven't seen this and our a die hard Rollins fan it's a must see or a must get.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Classic Material From The Aging Alternative Icon, May 21, 2005
This review is from: Henry Rollins: Live at Luna Park (DVD)
'Live At Luna Park' is loaded with more classic material from Henry Rollins. The DVD is culled from a few different performances over a month's span at Luna Park. From beginning to end, this DVD showcases Rollins' intensity, compassion, and humor. Everything he releases, whether it be spoken word projects or Rollins Band albums, is incredible. Rollins' material here, like all of his work, makes you think, laugh and is always worth a second or third watch.

Check this DVD out if you are a Rollins' fan or even if you've never heard of him. Hank is just about the most honest, interesting, and funniest performer working today. You won't be disappointed. Even if you don't agree with him, you will still appreciate what he does.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY!!!, May 6, 2005

I came across this by pure luck and chance and had to get it. After watching it.....all I can say is that Henry Rollins, even though he is a punker to certain extents,....Live at Luna Park will leave you laughing from beginning to end. Some of the material on the DVD is taken from some of his CD's (Rollins in the Wry being one of them...a bit revamped but still in the same vein), but again it is still funny. If you ever happen to come across Henry Rollins either live or a spoken word/comedy CD....get it...listen...laugh. It's like being in a massive train wreck with carnage all about you and you are standing there laughing at it because somewhere....a person is able to take some of the ugliness and make light of everything.
