From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. Young Henry, who sees visions where others see only meaningless patterns, undertakes a quest, venturing into the Necromancer's realm. With his staunch companions Byron and Nadia, Henry outwits a giant serpent, defeats a pack of trolls, finds a long-hidden treasure, overcomes the Necromancer, and discovers that he is the rightful heir to the throne. Henry vows to knight Byron and marry Nadia, and "thus the kingdom prospered . . . as anyone with vision could foresee." The references to vision allude to the "magic eye" illustrations that appear frequently throughout the book. Fans of the N. E. Thing Enterprises posters and Magic Eye books so popular last year will enjoy throwing their eyes out of focus to catch glimpses of the 3-D images (15 in all) that illustrate the story. Those who can't quite make out the hidden pictures can see smaller, shadowy versions at the end of the book. Other full-color illustrations appear throughout the volume as well. As fantasies go, the story's a bit thin, but readers still thrilled with their ability to see 3-D will enjoy the way that idea is woven into the story. Carolyn Phelan

Review

The 3D Magic Eye is woven with a medieval fantasy story to create an unusual interactive picturebook mystery for kids. Henry has the gift of the Magic Eye: an ability to see into patterns to discover the hidden images which determine the future of kingdoms. Excellent reading and visual skills will prove essential to the successful understanding of this tale's complex adventures. -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent integration of visuals and good plot, June 21, 1998
This review is from: Henry's Gift: The Magic Eye (Hardcover)
Henry's gift has an excellent story line. The magic eye images and surealistic illustration only add to this book. The only thing keeping this book away from a whopping 5 stars is David Worsick writing technique. It's as if during the narration he is writing to an adult audience, but during dialouge he tries to appeal to children. His wealth of knowledge on the subject of midevil times, though, partialy make up for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new meaning to the word "vision", September 29, 2010
This review is from: Henry's Gift: The Magic Eye (Hardcover)
This simple medieval style swords and sorcery adventure gives a new and interesting meaning to the term vision. The story is another rendition of the old one about a young man on a journey to learn who he truly is in relation to a throne that has been usurped. While the text does not grab you, what makes the book work is that it is supplemented by a set of 3-D illusions; the kind where if you look at them right the image will appear. Therefore, this is a book with actual visions and in the story the young man Henry is the only one that can look at old parchments and see the "vision" embedded within it.
If you are one of the people that has difficulty with viewing the 3D component of these images, a complete set of what you should see is included at the end. I must confess that while I did see something similar, my "visions" were not quite as accurate at they could have been.

I really love these books. I am fascinated by the technique used to get the 3-d affect. I have everyone out.
