Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is usually transmitted by the feco-oral route. Although rare cases of infection following transfusion with single donor blood have appeared in the literature, recent reports implicating coagulation factor VIII concentrate in an outbreak of hepatitis A among hemophilia patients in Europe were totally unexpected. This publication reports the proceedings of a meeting held to discuss the evidence for and against implication of factor VIII in these outbreaks, as well as possible approaches to preventing any further HAV infection in hemophilia patients.
