Book Description

June 1994 3805560060 978-3805560061
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is usually transmitted by the feco-oral route. Although rare cases of infection following transfusion with single donor blood have appeared in the literature, recent reports implicating coagulation factor VIII concentrate in an outbreak of hepatitis A among hemophilia patients in Europe were totally unexpected. This publication reports the proceedings of a meeting held to discuss the evidence for and against implication of factor VIII in these outbreaks, as well as possible approaches to preventing any further HAV infection in hemophilia patients. Grouped into three sections on epidemiology, molecular biology and inactivation studies, the contributions to this issue present the most current clinical and scientific information on the possible link between factor VIII concentrate and HAV infection. In the wake of the HIV epidemic and its repercussions this will be of vital interest to hematologists, virologists and blood product manufacturers.
