The father of modern hepatology, in his own words, December 18, 2011
This review is from: Hepatology: A Festschrift for Hans Popper (Falk Symposium) (Hardcover)
This "festshrift" (Anniversary publication) of Dr. Popper's work was published in 1984, just 4 years before his death at 92. I am an otolaryngologist so my interest in Dr. Popper might be a surprise to a more predictable fan, such as a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.
I was privileged to know Dr. Popper. We met when I was a med student and Dr Popper delivered a series of lectures on hepatology to my class. I spoke to him after one lecture because I'd heard from another professor that Dr Popper was responsible for the concept of creatinine clearance as a measure of glomerular filtration (kidneys function) and this is still a pillar of internal medicine today.
He was a kind and gentle man with a prominent Austrian accent to his otherwise perfect English. Had I known what I do now about this man's life and accomplishments I'd have tried to work for him or something. Alas, there was no Internet then, no simple way for a mere med student to uncover his manifold intellectectualism.
Even with the current resources of Internet, I am still wondering, whether he was related to Dr Sir Karl Popper, the scientific philosopher who was his contemporary in Austria (and who also emigrated after the Austrian Anschluss). I *suspect* he was.... they even resemble one another in photos I've seen online.
Anyway, I bought this book in 1988 and have loved this ever since. Its failure to garner my final star is only due to the work in hepatology which has occurred since its publication.
But, to any hepatologist ... or past student of Hans Popper, this is a necessary addition to one's personal library.
