HER OWN BEST ENEMY is the first book in a thrilling series from author Cynthia Justlin, a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart finalist in romantic suspense

Desperate to track down her ex-husband who disappeared along with their son, Grace Stevens delves into his past and uncovers evidence of a shocking dual life. The man she thought was an ordinary computer consultant is in fact a former high-ranking Special Forces officer with unique skills in military intelligence. With nowhere to turn she is forced to plead for help from Keith King, the one man she hoped to never see again. Against her better judgment she’ll have to put her child’s fate into his hands.

Keith has officially hit rock bottom. Framed for the theft of deadly missile components, the cynical Special Forces officer is in danger of losing the only thing he can count on: his career. His one shot at clearing his name lies in locating Grace’s ex, who was working with Keith on a secret mission to take down a cutthroat military traitor. But to team up with Grace he’ll need to spend 24/7 with a woman who has every reason to hate him.

Out to use each other for their own agenda, desperate mother and disillusioned soldier find they must work together to stay alive, and in the process discover that sometimes even the best of enemies fall in love.

About the Author

Cynthia Justlin's love of the written word began at a very young age, when a trip to the library meant packing a lunch and heading out on her bicycle for a day of fictional adventures. Drawn to stories of happily ever after, she started penning her own, but couldn't seem to resist the urge to throw the occasional explosion or dead body into the mix. She found the best of both worlds writing gritty, action packed romantic thrillers. Cynthia makes her home in Arizona with her husband and two sons. She is also a Stage IV cancer survivor, and living proof that hope and faith can work miracles.

This book held my interest all the way through keeping me in the story, clicking pages, and wanting to know more. I thought it was a good mix of drama, suspense, action, and romance, and yet not too graphic at all. Both the dialogue and pace flowed very smoothly. I found a few scenes to be very touching and emotional. The characters of the hero and heroine were well-developed and the author's writing made me feel as if I were inside their heads knowing their thoughts. Grace was believable as mother who would do anything to find and protect her son. The depiction of how Keith regretted and overcame his bad boy past was plausible - even if just a tad overdone, it emphasized just how much and why his teenage years and military career defined him as a person, and his decisions/actions towards the end were quite consistent and credible, in my opinion. I would have liked a bit more interaction between Grace and her sister, Becca, and more information than what was given about Becca's condition and how she coped all these years because she didn't seem to be as bad off as Grace made her out to be, but even without this, the author delivered a very satisfying story and conclusion. Her Own Best Enemy is the first book I've read by this author and I will look forward to reading her future releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great balance of romance and suspense May 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tightly written and well-balanced romantic suspense story about a mother on a quest to save her son and a fallen hero on a quest for redemption. The best part about this book for me was the action scenes. They were fast-paced and moved the story as well as the romantic involvement between Grace and Keith along with the right sense of tension and adventure. It's always difficult to involve children in a romance or suspense plot, but I felt Her Own Best Enemy managed to handle Grace's concern for her son, Ryker, and her growing feelings for Keith in a believable way. At times it felt like the past connection between Grace and Keith was just thrown in to add obstacles in a scenario that was already chock-full, but it was only a minor distraction for me as the characters and the adventure were executed really well.

There are also some nice hints dropped in of other Special Ops team members who are fascinating characters in their own rights that I'm sure have stories of their own coming up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense! April 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book! My time is limited and I'm very picky about what I read. Her Own Best Enemy blew me away from the first page - I couldn't put it down. Keith is one of my favorite heroes ever and Grace is a strong, capable heroine whose love for her son had me tearing up a couple of times. The villain is well done and very believable. I especially liked the way his agenda tied into the overall plot. I can't recommend this book enough. It's a quick read but the characters stay with you long after you've finished.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense! November 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
An enjoyable romantic suspense novel, Her Own Best Enemy is fast paced and exciting ride. This novel has complex characters you will love, a lot of action and is an overall delightful read!

Grace Stevens is asking for help from a man she never wanted to face again, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Discovering her ex-husband's double life and secrets concerning military intelligence she knows she is way in over her head. So she turns to Keith King, former classmate turned Special Forces officer, for help to locate her son who has disappeared with her ex-husband. Grace hopes Keith does not recognize her in order to avoid rehashing bad memories, but she'll risk it all to save her son. Keith is reluctant to agree at first, but he decides helping Grace might also help him clear his name. Currently residing is a military rehabilitation center, Keith decides escaping to help Grace might discover who is truly behind the crime of stealing dangerous missile codes which he is being framed for.

Motivated by their individual motives, this unlikely duo pairs up to find the truth and Grace's son. Grace tries to hold on to her disdain for Keith, but soon realizes this is not the same boy she knew so many years ago. Yet growing closer to this man is an impossible situation for Grace. As they fight along side each other they can't deny the feelings that are starting to develop. Now it's a race against time to save her son and stop the enemy from unleashing a deadly weapon against humanity.

Cynthia Justlin pens a truly enjoyable and suspenseful novel with Her Own Best Enemy. It takes a bit to jump into the fast action, but after that it is a thrilling ride to the finish.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well written but terrible story December 21, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Leading lady asks expert for help to rescue her son and then proceeds to ignore his advice every single time. This is the entire story and an extremely irritating story it is too. This is a pity as the standard of writing is quite good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do it for me, unfortunately. August 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story should have been a right humdinger, but for me, it fell short of what I expected. The start was good and strong, boding well for the rest of the plot. However, it soon became apparent that I needed to slap the heroine, Grace, senseless.

I liked the hero, Keith, but thought he could have done better than lust after Grace, whose idiocy defied description. Just one example: running screaming to the killers was hardly a good move. Trusting the bad guys, constantly second-guessing and dis-arming the hero who is trying desperately to save her and her child, is just plain madness. I couldn't like the heroine, but I liked the child and I liked the hero.

I won't give definitive spoilers, but Grace's feelings for her ex-husband under the circumstances revealed in the plot, were unconvincing and her lust for Keith misplaced.
The pace was fast, the work well-written but unfortunately it did not "gel" for me. This would not preclude me from reading more from this author, however.
