Book Description

November 4, 2011

The life stories of these "daughters of Africa" are sometimes playful and sometimes painful - but always awe-inspiring in their truth and candor. Sweeping across history and over continents, they portray the energy, creativity, and resilience of black women such as Ana Quirot, a Cuban runner who overcame life-threatening burns to triumph in the Olympic games; Yelena Khanga, a black Russian woman who hosts the most popular television show in Russia and performs with a comedy troupe in New York; and Lulu Shite, the diamond-studded madam of Mahogany Hall in New Orleans.Organized by field of endeavor, chapters include African Queens; Slaves Who Refused to Bow; Freedom Fighters, Rabble Rousers, and Audacious Advocates; Powerful Politicos and Bold Businesswomen; and Sassy Songbirds, Dazzling Dancers, and Talented Thespians.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cleopatra myth, December 29, 2005
This review is from: In Her Footsteps: 101 Remarkable Black Women from the Queen of Sheba to Queen Latifah (Paperback)
I wonder why the author is so keen to claim Cleopatra as one of her own people. She was certainly not black, she wasn't even Egyptian except by birth, she was Greek, her father was Ptolemy XII Auletes and her mother,as was customary for Egyptian pharoahs, would have been a close relative, probably a sister.

Cleopatra would have owned black slaves like any other ruler of ancient Egypt which makes her an odd choice for this list.I'm afraid such lack of regard for accuracy discredits both the author and her, no doubt, well intentioned book.

Annette Madden has done a spectacular job in this book on women of African descent from all over the world. I would never have known the wide spectrum of accomplishments, and the variety of locations, of these wonderful women. I feel as if I have been let in on a secret that everyone should know! Thank you Ms. Madden!
