About the Artist
A New York City native, singer/songwriter/guitarist Vanessa Lowe began her performing career at Speakeasy in New York's East Village several years ago. Since then, she has appeared on college radio shows, and at coffee houses and music festivals around the country, including the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, one of the largest arts festivals in the U.S., and the Ticketmaster Music Showcase at the Mercury Cafe in Denver.

Vanessa's lyrics have been described as "jaded", and often catch the underside of a laugh or the edge of a sigh, but her clear, warm vocal presence is a thread that runs throughout her shifting musical moods. Whether she's singing about a relationship between a prostitute and her cleaning man ("Her House Of Sin"), a childhood friend's decline into psychosis ("Cold Storm"), or famous dead people ("Mona Lisa"), her poetic insight and sensitive wit remain constant.

Newly relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, Vanessa will be performing throughout Northern California while she works on material for her next album.

Vanessa Lowe's debut CD, "Her House Of Sin", is a collection of original songs that winningly showcases her own edgy brand of "alternapopfolk". Recorded in Denver and produced by Vanessa and Jeremy Lawton, the album's twelve tracks span a range from live acoustic rawness (voice and guitar), through rich layers of cello and percussion, to full band arrangements (electric guitars, bass, and drums). Vanessa Lowe's music is some of the most moving I've heard from a young artist. Simple melodies that bring to mind Fleetwood Mac and Suzanne Vega combine with an economy of words reminiscent of Elvis Costello. The result is thoughtful, touching music that I find myself listening to again and again.

It's great to hear some new music with lyrics that have depth and that intrigue and cause you to think.The guitar is great and each song has a sound all it's own. I listen to it over and over again without tiring of it.

This is one of the most original and best independent releases I've heard in the past year (and I've heard a lot doing internet DJ'ing!). Her melodies take unexpected, fresh turns, the lyrics are rich, and the production is very good. Listen to this one.
