Editorial Reviews

Georgia Gibbs was First Introduced as "her Nibs, Miss Gibbs" on Jimmy Durante’s Show, and that is the Title of Living Era’s Fine Selection of 28 Numbers from her Peak Years. She Had Six Top Six Hits (All Included), Three of them Million Sellers: The Argentine Tango-based "kiss of Fire" of 1952, and her Two R&B ‘white Covers’ of 1955, "tweedle Dee" and "dance with Me", "henry". The Others Are "if I Knew You were Comin’ I’d have Baked a Cake" (1950)," While You Danced, Danced, Danced" (1951) and "seven Lonely Days". (1953). Her Sultry, Throbbing Voice is Well Suited to Romantic Ballads Such as He’s Funny that Way Or It’s the Talk of the Town, but She Can Be Equally Thrilling Belting Out a Red-hot Jazz Number Like A-razz-ama- Tazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgia swings brightly--and she never lets go of a superfluous note, June 2, 2009

This review is from: Her Nibs Miss Georgia Gibbs (Audio CD)
Georgia Gibbs always sang beautifully; and this album showcases her wonderful talent with an emphasis on her biggest hits. Her voice was invariably as clear as a bell; and that impresses me. The quality of the sound is excellent and I really like that artwork, too.

The CD starts with a shining tune, "Kiss Of Fire;" Georgia sings this with true passion and her excellent diction bolsters her performance all the more. Georgia manages to make "Kiss Of Fire" sound so fresh and new; and that's grand. Her vocal range is just perfect for this CD, too. Similarly, Georgia does great justice to the classic ballad entitled "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd Have Baked A Cake;" the Dixieland style arrangement works wonders for this number and it's a major highlight of this CD. "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine" gets the royal treatment from Georgia Gibbs; she infuses this with energy and the big band arrangement sounds really good as Georgia sings this to perfection--and beyond!

"Play A Simple Melody" couldn't have been done any better; Georgia's delivery is nothing short of perfect--this is all THAT good. "Razz-A-Ma-Tazz" is just plain fun; and listen for Georgia to outdo even herself on "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White;" I love it! The lush musical arrangement for this tune uses the strings to great advantage, too. "Moth And A Flame" is absolutely superb; the percussion enhances the music that fits perfectly with Georgia's brilliant vocals. Georgia never lets go of a superfluous note; and this is a big reason why her fans adored her every day of the year.

"Say It Isn't So" is a most romantic ballad even though the lyrics aren't all that happy; "Seven Lonely Days" is in a similar vein but even these tunes glisten in Georgia Gibbs' capable hands! In addition, "He's Funny That Way" gets a fine interpretation by Georgia; she never skips a beat, either! "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" features Georgia singing with Richard Hayman & His Orchestra; and wow, how they make this number so very special! Georgia delivers this with all her heart and soul. "I Love Paris" is both romantic and nostalgic; it's easily another big highlight of this fine CD.

"It's The Talk Of The Town" shows Georgia's sublime ability to deliver a ballad alongside the best of them; she truly was quite the chanteuse! "My Sin" is a fine tune with a great arrangement; and I particularly enjoy hearing Georgia singing "The Man That Got Away." "The Man That Got Away" was first sung by Judy Garland in her musical remake of "A Star Is Born;" and I think Judy would be proud of Georgia's rendition of this stunning ballad. "Tweedle Dee" is well done; and the CD also ends strong with Georgia Gibbs performing "Dance With Me Henry (Wallflower)."

Georgia Gibbs will always be remembered as one of the very best songbirds of the twentieth century; she gave blood to make her songs special and this CD showcases her talents nicely. Many diehard fans will have these numbers already and perhaps they should look for more comprehensive CDs or box sets. This CD is especially good, however, for the more casual fan or the newcomer just discovering Georgia Gibbs and her talent.
